Re: What happens if I go over 250GB bandwidth use?

Oh really? Doesnt Comcast counts everything? What do they count and not found as traffic?
Anything that crosses the modem to and from the net. Nothing inter-LAN.
lol. If that was the case, they wouldn't be offering business class.

So the 1% could be someone above 500 GB a month?

Downloading headers on newsgroup should be FREE. Just kidding ..

I should have actually said "no one would buy business class/HSI" if they counted local traffic. That would be stupid anyway.

Have a good day.

I kind of have gone over this month... should I be worried? This is the first time I have gone over and it's only by 16GB...

Well, now that you've posted it on a forum that is read and monitored by Comcast employees, who knows now.

Good Lord we have nothing to worry about if Comcast's metering system is going to be so grossly incorrect a lot of the time.

I just got Comcast HSI a couple of weeks ago, and looked at my usage graph for the first time. It says I've used 62GB, or 24% of my limit this month. It seemed like quite a bit for our house, so I checked my router. I've got Tomato v1.27 running on a Linksys, and it keeps track of upload and download totals. For the last 30 days, it says I've got a total of 7GB download.

Bottom line: I have no idea how Comcast is keeping track, but they are way off (as has been said here).

I tried extra hard this month, as if the meter was a game, to get as close to 250 GB as possible, without going over.

I'm at 226 and it's day 31. Pretty close, but still aways to go. I'll just leave it as is. To fit 24GB in from now until 11:59pm isn't trivial.

If someone could try this it would be interesting

don't use the internet connection for a month
Ie have just a router connected this way we could see if its counting arp traffic (which would be 5gb per month if I remeber correctly)

We will be on vacation for a week in July. I will shut
down everything including the router and modem and
see if it registers any traffic.

Anyone think that powering the modem off at night and
during other non use times will save anything over
leaving it on when there in minimal activity?

March came in at 112GB as measured by my gateway router box. We just got our Wii Netflix app cd, so we'll see how "HD" (dvd quality, basically) streaming adds to the mix.

I don't worry about bandwidth use at all, and have three people on this line. Looking at the past year it seems like 120-140GB/mo is my typical use.

That's 11:59PM UTC. Should be 7:59PM your local time. Even less trivial now, better get started.

The meter operates on universal time (UT or GMT). This means that the "new month" which will show a meter reset to zero appears in the evening of the last day of the month across the US. For example, Eastern Time is typically 5 hours behind UT or GMT.

Thanks.

This is also interesting.....

At the start of each month the meter is reset to zero but shows "1GB." The
background traffic described above consumes less than 1GB, so a subscriber with a
powered up cable modem and router but no devices connected will see 1GB on the
meter for the entire month.

Wasn't hard for me... you need to try harder! lol

Personally I think the 99% statistic is complete bs. But that's just me. But I'm sure there are other who agree with me. The internet is moving into a high bandwidth monster. People are starting to watch HD streaming videos on YouTube, download HD movies ranging up to 10GB each... this cap will not be reasonable for much longer.

They just implemented the meter here in Fremont, CA. It shows that I'm way over their 250 GB/Mo. This means that some/all of the following will have to be canceled:
ROKU internet music & movies;
Netflix downloaded movies;
Amazon downloaded movies;
MLB-TV for 2010;
DirecTV Gamelounge;
Online backup service like MOZY & Carbonex, etc.
This essentially removes the great features that internet access has provided in these "modern" times. For retired people this is a severe blow.
It seems rather severe if Comcast just cuts a user off as they need their service for banking, medical and other essential services. This is a bitter pill in an area that has an exclusive agreement with one cable provider.
