Re: BF:BC2 Now Shipping

You need to change the buttons in SetPoint to be "generic buttons"

The problem with that is then the buttons don't work in my other apps or am I missing something?

BTW, Setpoint 6.0 is out at least for Windows 7. I installed and it didn't make any difference.

Well I use 4 & 5 on my logitech mouse on Win7. These are what I find are the back & forward buttons, typically used for browsing. They continue to work for that. If you are using the "zoom" button or whatever, that won't work anymore for that AFAIK.

Do the higher level weapons have an imbalance to them in the game? I really need to start playing this more hardcore than I am now (which is not very much).
Yes, they seem to. But BF2 was the same way. Higher levels of weapons have better accuracy. If you want to rack up game points, jump into an AFV.
there are some high level guns considered OPed and in general they have more stat points than low level. however there generally isnt one end-all be-all weapon in each class. M60 LMG for medics is considered OP b/c it has high accuracy and dmg, but it's low fire rate is an impediment in close and close/medium combat for sure.i have gold medal with it and it's almost worthless in close fights b/c of its low fire rate and the buggyness of hit detection (especially with LMGs)
This definitely the case. Unlocks don't go from weakest to strongest weapon. The M60 is the best overall Medic machine gun and is a mid-way unlock, but as mentioned before it isn't the best for CC fighting. The final unlock for Medic is the MG3 and it sucks because of poor damage and accuracy.

The best overall sniper rifle is the GOL Magnum (unlocked mid-way) followed by the M24 (which you start with). The M95 Barret is the final unlock for sniper, but it's not a one-shot kill, unless you get a head shot and the accuracy is inferior to the two I already mentioned. It's also the slowest to cycle.

The things that make the greatest difference are the Kit upgrades and how you use them. Upgrade to Magnum Ammo to get kills with less shots. Upgraded body armor for survivability or upgraded explosives to make killing a AFV a two shot deal. There are others as well, and choosing the Kit to go with a particular weapon is the challenging part.

This notion of unlocking weapons is the reason I do not buy many new games. Although I want to, I cannot commit the time. I wish developers would knock it off, I want to jump in, play for a couple of hours, then go to bed. I would like to be able to do this maybe 2-3 times a week. With unlocks however, the game is not fun for those in my situation. Basically with the unlocking schemes I've seen to date, the unnecessary rewards all boil down to time invested gaming.
If unlocking is really required (I'm not convinced it is), one day they could be based on skills, not a sum of massive actions.

I'm not a big fan of unlock systems either, but they've done a good job in this case. You get unlocks based on points scored, but points scored are not just about kills. Quite often you will see someone with a negative frag rate with the top score. You get points for kills, but you can rack up alot more points doing your job.

Medics get points for healing up their team with heal packs and reviving team mates. Recon gets points for reconning. If you spot an enemy to your team and a team mate takes him out, you get points. Engineers get points for repairing, as well as destroying vehicles. Assault gets points for resupplying team mates.

Unlocks come rapidly this way, and you don't have to be the person with the most kills. The play is really squad oriented.

not to mention that by about rank 20 youll have most of the unlocks if you play the different classes somewhat equally. if you concentrate on 1 class, you can get all of its unlocks in just a handful of ranks, probably less than 8, and each class is very usable after just a few unlocks.

is your mouse a no name? if so thats your problem....my 518 logitech side buttons work just fine
I have the Logitech 518 mouse and I can't map any of the extra buttons. Are you running SetPoint 4.8? Windows 7-64 bit? Did you buy through Steam? That's my set up.

Thx.
hard copy of the game, vista 64, no setpoint installed....

I agree totally. I HATE the unlock system, but am kinda used to it since BF and BF2142, but with those games it seemed to take me FOREVER to get 1 unlock. Maybe I was not playing the right game type and thinking about getting a lot of points.

Luckily I ran across some tips for BC2 about how to rack up points and level up faster (no not any cheating). So I have been playing Squad Deathmatch and using the Medic a lot to heal Squadmates. Since last Thursday I have gone from zero to Level 7. That is playing about 1-2 hours a day. One game I ended up with close to 8,000 points. The key is to get good award bonuses I guess. Most games I can get around 1,000 points. Plus it helps to have a good squad that works together, since if you win the round you get bonus points.

The other thing you can do is go to an empty Rush server and play a round as attacker. Blow up each MCom in turn and use vehicles. Depending on your class, (engineer, sniper etc.) you can run up an easy 1350-2000 points. perfectly legal, too.

Wish I had thought of that. I finished all the unlocks for all classes last week at level 23.

Sweet, great tip! I need the better Eng weapons, the default rifle and shotguns suck for most maps.

New patch posted today. Wouldn't install properly, though. Had to fiddle a bit, but it does work.

Changelog

quote:
It’s cleared QA for both non-Steam and Steam.

This is a small update for a bug that was found the same day that we released the previous patch.

Changes:
• Server browser downloads 100 entries instead of 500 in a chunk – this makes the “Cancel” button more responsive
• Fixed crash during server browser refresh
• Low-level networking library switched back to the optimized version (the game client was temporarily running with one that had more debugging logic in it)
• Localization fixes in the scoreboard
• Server browser ping handling code modified

UPDATE: Patch is live as of 2010-03-22 16:13 GMT.

I'll be damned. Uninstalling setpoint did the trick. Thanks!
