| Benign Monopoly quote: For years, at various times, tech giants such as Microsoft, Google and Apple have all been referred to as benign monopolies.
Unless you're talking about copyrights or patents. They arent monopolies so they cant be benign nor malicious. It's hard to be a monopoly when your competition is named in the same sentence.
Is microsoft dominate of the market? Definitely. That's a good thing for the free market. We really dont have any monopoly problems in the tech field. If AMD were to go bankrupt tommorrow. SPARC or a half dozen others would jump right into their place. If ATI were to go also. Im not really sure who could replace them. Other then people would rely on onboard intel based stuff I suspect lol.
EU saying Google is a monopoly or anti-competitive or whatever is just crazy too me. Google steals all their ideas from other people. Facebook/myspace? GOOGLE BUZZ! Mapquest? GOOGLE MAPS! Yahooo? GOOGLE! Babelfish? GOOGLE TRANSLATE!
How can you be a monopoly when you steal all your ideas? Dont get me wrong. Google act of not being evil while doing good business is awesome, great, and boggles the mind. Google is practically the only publically traded company which isnt absolutely the worst kind of evil.
Moreover. Lets say somehow Google is anti-competitive and a monopoly. Microsoft can just force everyone's homepage to become bing through an update. Now suddenly 50% of the world is using bing.
Truly though. The only monopolies we need to control are regional/natural based ones and government based ones.
Roosevelt went to get ALCOA. It wasnt because of any illegal activity. It was simply because of them being massively dominant. Even if they were a total monopoly in north america. There's no reason to bust them up. Aluminum doesnt go bad. You can import aluminum from practically anywhere. Which they definitely didnt control everything.
This is different from natural monopolies. Public utilities, food, and ISPs. Luckily nobody has tried very hard to become a massive force in the food area. Public utilities are generally heavily regulated and considered common carrier.
For some reason ISPs have managed to keep their essential monopoly or if you're lucky and have a 2nd choice... you have an oligopoly. -- -- if (value == 0) return value; else return 0; |
