1 edit | GREAT P.R. Stunt, Google! Okay... obviously the people in KS are not that bright.. changing their name to Google "for a month"....? At least DishNetwork gave free basic dish service to a town willing to change their name to "Dish" - which to be honest was a disgusting act of commercialism in the first place..
Google isn't out to become a nationwide fiber network, obviously... but for cities to "want" google's fiber and pulling tricks and stunts to get attention.. well, it ain't gonna work! Maybe someone should tell that government board to get an education and learn how to actually run a government body.. if you REALLY want someone to deploy fiber in a town, you need to give to take.. and changing your name to "google" and "for a month" is simply giving google some free advertisement; in the middle of no where, USA.
Seriously.. maybe these people could get bright enough to come up with a package to a provider out there already and attract fiber deployment on their own.
This is becoming a joke, to be honest, but I'm sure google is enjoying the PR - not like the need it. Google has become to search engines as Xerox was to the photo copier.
Not to mention, if I were a resident of Topeka, and my city counsel did this with out the consent of the people, I for one would be PISSED! |

Oh good grief...its for a month, not permanently, and the article doesn't discuss anything in the order of incentives that I am sure they would offer, should Google decide to consider the area. I think that is just something to catch their eye and let them know they're really...really..interested. There is no permanent change here, and its cutesy at best.

How...do you know the situation in the area? If its anything like Columbia, SC there IS NO COMPETITION. There isn't a way to come up w/ a package like that because TWC has it pretty much locked down. The start up costs would be tremendous. Google offers a unique opportunity to be able bring in something that normally just wouldn't really be possible.
I still don't understand all the Google hate. As far as corporations go in this country, they're angelic in comparison to 95% of the others.

They want to build the NBAF facility in Manhattan. Basically housing the most deadly things known to animal AND humankind. Though there are claims to the contrary, it is a FACT that the crap they want to put here is about the most evil stuff known.

I don't care if it's for a day... the name of the place it TOPEKA.. not "Google"... that's plain ass silly..
.. and I don't hate google... I like the company.. it has NOTHING to do with hate, for google that is. It's HATE for the people that run this country... Yes, I hate politicians. And this isn't an article about Columbia SC.. it's about Topeka KS.. if you don't like the lack of competition in Columbia.. move. I, like some people, make choices in where I live based on services.. and if you think that's a silly idea, then why are cities ranked based on the over all happiness of the people who live there.. it's becuase the cities offer what they need. |

Therefore, if there is an article about AT&T and you don't have their service, then you need to shut up.
If There is an article about Comcast and you don't have their service or they're not in your area, then you need to shut up.

1 edit | I believe I stated that.. but it still doesn't matter.. and how do you know that the people of that town WANTED to have the name of their town changed to that of a commercial entity? You don't have to answer that.. the fact of the matter is that they didn't ask the town's people... did they? They didn't put it to a vote, did they? The small few person body that makes up the counsel did this on their own.
The fact is that MANY people don't like these things messed with.. if someone tried to change the name of Minneapolis with out asking the people that live there for permission, you better believe there would be an uproar. Towns have history and to simply change the name of it with out asking or thinking it through, in the minds of anyone REASONABLE, would find this VERY objectionable.
And... yes, it does step on people's rights..
While we're at it.. I hope Washington DC changes their name to Comcast just to get them to lay fiber to the home.. |

| Okay, if you want to talk about history, how about the fact that this town did change its name in 1998 to ToPikachu in honor of Pokemon. This isn't the first time that the community to Topeka has done this, and the mayor who did this was re-elected so clearly it didn't offend the citizens there enough to kick her out.
Every community is different in this regard. This is why we need to differentiate between national, state and local governments. If the state or federal government made a mandate that forced them to do something, I could understand the outrage, but SELF-governance isn't the same thing as BIG government. |

Look, I'm not going to go into the science of how people get elected, nor do I feel this topic needs to continue of any further. But, just becuase someone gets re-elected doesn't mean that the people approved of every single thing a politician did... GW Bush anyone? Many people, even in his own isle, didn't approve of the job he did, but he got a second term..
So let's drop this now.. or, you're welcome to continue on.. with out me. |
