 | I never went to the moon, but I still found the moon landing with Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins to be totally captivating--as did much of the world. (Of course, I didn't actually want to go to the moon myself. I, personally, have no use for a 1 gbps connection, though I do see its potential when such speed--or even a tenth of it--becomes ubiquitous.) So, all of the PR surrounding Google's planned deployment should be expected. And the "Google, Kansas" thing is no different than giving someone a "Key to the City" (which, you know, is just a big, fake key with a big ribbon that usually means nothing beyond the period of the event itself). And while no one goes to the moon much anymore, we did receive some major benefits from the programs that launched those missions. Hopefully, this project will also have major benefits for consumers. And unless it comes to my community, I'll just find it interesting light reading for the foreseeable future... even with the PR stunts. |
