Comcast says it should be compatible with their cable system. Comcast says all SURFboard cable modems work well with their service.

While it may be compatible you have no choice but to buy said gateway. being "compatible" does not mean it will work. So you could of just bought yourself a $XXX door stop.
If it didn't matter then why would they have a approved modem list.
