1) buy any HARDWARE external modem. See »tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html - you want to avoid any modem that needs a "driver" of any kind. Winmodems are good examples. As a rough guide, if the modem is very inexpensive, it's a softmodem.

2) plug it in



Modems are getting pretty rare these days!
