Chromium and YouTube HTML5, this worked for me

If you use Chromium, you will receive an error message on HTML5 videos on YouTube. The message reads "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available." If you try the same thing with the Google Chrome browser, it will work just fine. This is because of the patent-encumbered h.264 codec.

When I installed the package "chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-nonfree" from the Chromium PPA, it automatically removed the package "chromium-codecs-ffmpeg". After doing so, I am able to view HTML5 videos on YouTube with Chromium on my Linux Mint 8 computer.

Try this out and see if it works for you. I might just be lucky.

This is great for people who wish to stick with the unbranded Chromium, rather than resort to using Google Chrome for Linux.

The bad news is that YouTube's HTML5 videos, at this point, look very pixelated. I did notice a performance increase and that the videos did play more smoothly over their Flash counterparts.

Now what must a non Ubuntu-based user do to acheive the same result? I am not sure what I can do on my openSUSE box, which I use more than Mint.

That's very useful. I didn't know that YouTube was offering their videos with HTML5. I've been using a Chrome extensions to use HTML5 to view the videos.
