Comcast may have only raised the HSI rates $2 but, they keep jacking up TV prices all the time. This is what pisses most people off, including myself. | |

why are carriers allowed to continually jack up prices in unison without competitive repercussions? 1st of all I see no proof that prices are "in unison" or any proof there is collusion. Prices go up because ABC, CBS, NBC, Disney, ESPN, Viacom, etc are always raising content prices. And then there is that pesky "inflation rate" where higher healthcare costs keep raising the costs of having employees(and cable & telcos have huge numbers of employees; unlike say Google). | |

True, but as the largest cable company in the USA, Comcast could negotiate lower prices if it wanted to. We see this in other industries such as retail, where larger retailers like Walmart and Target routinely buy product from suppliers at lower prices than smaller retailers.
The only reason that Comcast doesn't do this is because it does not have to. It isn't like FIOS TV, satellite TV or other providers offer better deals.
I'm not trying to advocate any sort of public policy with this response, I am just providing an analysis given the current market situation in which Comcast finds itself.
That being said... I need to find a way to get at least one of my friends to help me install an outdoor antenna on my roof.

kudos:3 | Re: 2 BUCKS!!! You say that they could negotiate a lower price if it (comcast) wanted to... the fact is that the content providers are going to raise their rates at every opportunity... Tom Cruise needs more money you know?
Who's to say that they are NOT negotiating a lower price? The truth is we don't... and we never will, so anything outside of that is an assumption. CV demonstrated that they were holding out becuase they didn't want to pay what ABC/Disney wanted.. it got the signal pulled. Comcast could very well be using it's power to hold prices down for all we know. I can say this, they may be expensive, however, I know other providers that are even more expensive...
Comcast used its size to build a bigger and better OnDemand service - in fact, they were the ones who pretty much pioneered what OnDemand is. Many other cable companies has crap for OnDemand becuase most networks wanted to use that platform as additional sources of revenue. Comcast wanted to carry it for free... its pretty clear who won that battle.
So it's not fair to say they aren't fighting to keep the prices down simply on the fact that we/no one really knows what goes on during the negos... | |

I would imagine that the argument he was making was actually geared for wireless carriers...and no, I'm not trying to debate that topic either. | |
