Re: killer set-top box? The cable co will kill that! .. and if that happened, I could see Cisco move towards the consumer end instead.. that would be a VERY bad move for cable...
Cable has one major kiss right now - the fact that there are no large consumer deployments of set-top boxes, yet. Cable wants the freedom to manage and upgrade their own networks as they please, ESPECIALLY now as they're on the horizon of new technologies. SDV already hit one area and Tivo snapped back at them in a MAJOR way, did they not?
Imagine if Cisco moved to a consumer set-top and flooded the market with boxes... that's just that many more customers who would be standing in the way of cable bricking those boxes and pissing off customers, grabbing the attention of the state's AG offices around the country, would it not?
So, it really isn't always up to the cable operators to all the shots right now. Cisco, in this case, wants to shine and show off their pretty bobble to the world.. their new "precious" if you will. If cable won't buy it and wants to stand in their way, their only alternative/audience is the consumer.
There is one thing I'm shocked at, right now, and I'm sure it's coming... I can almost guarantee you that apple will eventually come out with a cable TV tuner with cable card interface.. if ANYONE is going to shake up the industry, I bet its going to be apple. They're not really friends with anyone; they're in it for themselves... add a cable card slot to apple tv, add tuner, have that nice pretty interface everyone seems to love, and there you go! .. shake up. |
