Huntr posted : I haven't really had problems with massive slowdowns in the past 6 years I've been on Bresnan. I switched up to the home plus (or whatever it was called) that gave me 18/1 and it was pretty rock solid. However, in the past few weeks it has turned for the worse. My upload speed has been better than my download which is very sad to see.

I had a 2nd ISP for a year which is DSL hosted by Bridgeband. Wow! They had terrible backbone problems. I have been very tempted myself to switch to Qwest as a 2nd ISP provider. I use Qwest at work for the past 6 years, and never had a problem with it.

It is sad to see Bresnan (Optimum) be so bad in this area now. I've always had good service with them.

They split our node off to a brand new Arris CMTS (I am on channel ID 1 for DS and 4 for US whereas I was on 50 and 60 respectively on the Cisco CMTS) and the old Cisco is still in service for some areas or they repurposed that IP.
koolkid1563 posted : Good to see you again Bigburd. One of my neighbors actually just switched to Qwest on Monday, actually the same one that was running one of my Bresnan probes. I haven't had time to go over and check it out to see how it stacks up. So far today's speed has been really good compared to the last few weeks since they switched out CMTS chassis from a Cisco unit to an Arris unit. Nothing compared to Powell's FTTH service but while Bresnan likes to think they can go toe-to-toe with FTTH on DOCSIS 1.x or 2.x they just can't with the over-subscription ratios they run their network at. I would like to think the new Arris CMTS chassis is a DOCSIS 3 chassis which I believe is what they used when they upgraded Bozeman. I know they trialed both Arris and Cisco DOCSIS 3 chassis in different areas. With any luck we may see something big happen in Butte soon. If you need/want me to run tests just ask.

bigburd posted : I simply cannot believe this thread has remained somewhat active this long. I really do feel for Bresnan customers at this point. I must say I dumped them a looong time ago and went with the second Qwest line and have been perfectly happy since. I get what they say i get and nothing less. Although i do wish i could get a reliable connection with the speed Bresnan claims to offer, I have saved HUNDREDS of dollars in internet fees switching to Qwest AND I have a static IP address. just remember if you want the good service from Qwest you want to use qwest.net and NOT MSN as your service provider.

I also must say that for those of you that have stayed on board with Bresnan after OVER A YEAR of flaky service, you either have extreme tenacity or severe brain damage. :)

Also after all of these posts and charts and graphs and promises and excuses and all on this thread there is only one thing needed to summarize 35 or so pages of posts:

BRESNAN == MASSIVE SLOWDOWNS

It's really too bad because before that massive outage it seems like they never got their mojo back. They had a great service up until that point as far as I was concerned.

Anyhow i have been getting nailed by people left and right complaining about Bresnan's service the last few weeks so i thought i would drop by to see what the buzz was.. and the thread i started is still rolling.. simply astounded....
Re: Massive Slowdowns?

koolkid1563 posted : Here we go again. Attached is a speedtest to Bresnan's Billings speedtest server, followed by a traceroute and a capture of my modem's stats at that time. Has been this way for a few hours. When I contacted support about my modem and several of my friend's modems in the area losing block sync at the exact same time they claimed it was because my line had a lot of noise on it and they 'weren't surprised I am having problems', however there is/was never any evidence of noise as far as I could tell. If they were looking at the US SNR most CMTS' as far as I know report the aggregate channel SNR/CNR and not a particular modem/connection. When I lose block sync, it changes frequencies between 111MHz DS, 23MHz US and 117MHz DS, 30.6MHz US, usually like clockwork between 00:30 and 01:30. Also at one time the config naming scheme that the CMTS offered changed, but again, according to Bresnan it is just me and I guess the rest is completely and 100% my modem controlling their CMTS. Cool, now where is the button to uncap my line again as it seems my modem is in complete control of the Butte network. /sarcasm :uhh:

[att=1]

Sun Nov 14 21:45:41 MST 2010
traceroute to billings.speedtest.bresnan.net (69.145.254.140), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 10.29.20.1 (10.29.20.1) 145.996 ms 107.238 ms 103.868 ms
2 butmtfh1hb6-GE-0-0-0-U96.int.bresnan.net (69.144.94.97) 101.263 ms 97.026 ms 103.900 ms
3 * blnmtfh2cr5-GE-3-0-9-U0.int.bresnan.net (72.175.110.34) 124.420 ms *
4 blnmtfh1hb7-GE-0-0-2-U0.int.bresnan.net (72.175.110.59) 134.600 ms 136.884 ms 120.147 ms
5 blnmtfh1svspd.int.bresnan.net (69.145.254.140) 108.584 ms 117.218 ms 114.433 ms

11/14/2010 9:45:44 PM
SNR: '38'
USPwr: '45'
USFreq: '23000000'
USChan: '2'
DSPwr: '1'
DSFreq: '111000000'
DSMod: 'QAM256'

anon posted : About 2 weeks ago, my Bresnan here in Helena dipped dramatically. I always used speedtest.net Kalispell server as my measuring stick. I would consistently get 105 ping & 8 Mbps, which is the package I have. Now, I get 208 ping & am lucky to get 3 Mbps.

I have called Bresnan several times about this and I always get the "modem levels are fine, you ping great in network" bullsh*t they spew.

Traceroute was showing horrible MS to Level3, so I called Level3 and reported the problem to them yesterday. Low and behold the MS to those same Level3 servers is right around 100 now, instead of 400 last night. Pretty nice calling a company and having your issue resolved!

BUT my ping has not changed. My ping via speedtest to Kalispell is still 200+. So I decided to try Speed Plus for a month since it is free for a month. My Mbps is 4.63, on a 15 Mbps connection. I have tried connecting directly to the modem and speeds increase slightly, but ping does not.

1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 11 ms 9 ms 9 ms hlnmt001hb7-GE-0-0-0-U136.int.bresnan.net [69.144.94.137]
4 13 ms 12 ms 15 ms mslmt002hb7-GE-0-1-0-U432.int.bresnan.net [69.144.26.102]
5 12 ms 12 ms 12 ms mslmtfh1cr5-GE-3-0-2-U0.int.bresnan.net [72.175.110.25]
6 57 ms 57 ms 57 ms gdjco001cr5-XE-5-3-0-U0.int.bresnan.net [72.175.111.20]
7 57 ms 57 ms 57 ms gdjco002cr5-XE-5-0-0-U0.int.bresnan.net [72.175.110.231]
8 64 ms 63 ms 64 ms chywy001cr5-XE-3-3-0-U0.int.bresnan.net [72.175.111.45]
9 68 ms 73 ms 67 ms dencofh1tr5-XE-5-3-0-U0.int.bresnan.net [72.175.110.229]
10 82 ms 82 ms 79 ms te-9-3.car1.Denver1.Level3.net [4.53.10.97]
11 95 ms 109 ms 108 ms ae-32-52.ebr2.Denver1.Level3.net [4.68.107.62]
12 74 ms 73 ms 72 ms ae-2-2.ebr2.Seattle1.Level3.net [4.69.132.53]
13 125 ms 62 ms 60 ms ae-2-52.edge1.Seattle3.Level3.net [4.68.105.44]

14 83 ms 81 ms 78 ms GOOGLE-INC.edge1.Seattle3.Level3.net [4.59.232.34]
15 83 ms 83 ms 87 ms 209.85.249.34
16 101 ms 104 ms 103 ms 209.85.250.126
17 111 ms 108 ms 114 ms 209.85.250.144
18 66 ms 67 ms 73 ms 209.85.254.146
19 94 ms 105 ms 71 ms 209.85.254.146
20 91 ms 92 ms 91 ms px-in-f103.1e100.net [74.125.155.103]

Those pings aren't terrible, but I can't get better than 115 or so ping in MW2 on my PS3.
