It's such a cool and power efficient card and a great OCer. Don't bother with the 4850s. You'll want dx11 support when it gets here anyway.
It's such a crappy card with its half-assed memory bandwidth - 128-bit and 256-bit is pretty easy to understand, I thought...
When someone asks about 4850 X2 2GB is more than funny to bring up power efficiency, nobody gives a crap about it, quite obviously.
Ahh and for DX11: 5770 is already weaker than 4890 was in DX10, it's got crippled memory pipe - though faster memory modules help a lot to alleviate this problem - so expecting it to be useful in DX11 is more than a pipe dream...
4850 X2 2GB ~$200 is a far better gamer choice than the crippled 5770 unless he wants to buy two 5770s immediately, for ~$400.

I see the 512mb version for 135 shipped and 120 after MIR. I see an XFX 1gb going for 155 shipped. So I'm not sure why you keep saying 170-180. Most of those expensive cards are based on the v1 coolers which are more expensive and are worse at cooling the GPU than the cheaper newer v2s. You can read about that here:

The HD5770 may have a 128 bit mem interface but it still has more memory bandwidth than the 4850 (76 gb/s on the 5770 and 59 gb/s on the 4850) thanks to its high frequency GDDR5.
Obviously the 4890 will have more raw power, but it is older tech and needs a mini nuclear reactor to power it compared to the 5770. The 5770 isn't even meant to beat the 4890. The 5770 is a upper mid range part vs the 4890 which is a flagship in its own line.
You could get 2x4850s for around 230-250 which is fine if you don't mind having more heat, power usage and decent bang for the buck performance but you don't care about tech (DX11, eyefnity, stream, etc) and are willing to upgrade again when dx11 games come out very soon.
For 310 you can get 2x5770 which would give you quite a bit more performance than the 4850 setup, a much more power efficient set up (18W at idle each) which runs very cool, plenty of OC headroom, all the latest tech such as stream, eyefinity, etc. Maybe a 5770 might not be able to handle the more demanding dx11 games at 1920x1080 but you can drop the resolution just a tad and still play very well. You should be just fine even at higher resolutions if you had 2 of them. When games using all of these new features come out, you're gonna wish you had that tech. |
