[General] New clear home modems with ext antenna port in the wor

Called clear today to get some help with my home modem and I was telling them they should make a modem with a ext antenna port and he said right now they are testing a new home modem that will have a ext antenna port and wifi installed. He said they aren't announcing anything yet but if all goes out well hopefully it gets released. Finally, Something that can give all of us a better signal in the works.

About time. It is just plain silly not to have an external antenna port. I mean com'on, all 3G modems have them.

However... isn't there also the potential of improving your signal strength only to find out that the tower you are connecting to is already saturated? It seems like many of the posts here are talking about how they have a strong signal but a very poor connection ie high pings and low DL speeds.

Well when I called they told me which towers are around me and which one I am connected to. If this modem get released, I dont see a problem calling in and getting a list of towers to where you can point the antenna towards the direction of the tower and do a speed test till you find the best result. Here in san antonio everyone is getting what they pay for. They must have alot of fiber backhauls for towers. go take a look at the clear map at clear.com. they literally cover all of san antonio.

I just got on line with CLEAR here in Raleigh. I am about a mile from the tower. I get 5 lights of signal response consistently, but my Speedtest rates, download are all over the map. No consistency at all. I've called their tech service. I guess what it boils down to is number of users attached and on line at that tower. Which doesn't help me at all. I'm checking a while longer (they offered me an extension to my "trial period".) to see if anything stabilizes. But, it looks like I'll be sticking with my ATT DSL for now. the only other option might be, Time Warner, for speed and consistency. But, I hate Time Warner with a passion . . . things may have changed with them, but I left years ago, because of the very poor cable signal out here and crappy customer service.

This is what I tell other people, If you got a landline keep it. If you dont have a option get clear and try it out.

The info about the new modem with external antennas and built in wifi is incorrect. There are no plans in the future to have one with external antennas or wifi. So far built in wifi has not worked with the system. They are, however, testing some models in Portland and Vegas that have omnidirectional antennas. But they are still internal.

This shows the G series with connectors. not sure of the connector size , N type may be. looks like one could be easily modified....

I don't understand why Clear can't come up with an external antenna. Xanadoo, a small wireless provider which operates in the 2.4 GHz range, I believe, has that option and it works well. I think Clear is simply hiding under their desks, as usual.

Quote from Liz (clear employee)
I just did some more research and it seems the tech is correct, however, we don't know when they will be available to the public...official word is "We are continually expanding our product line and are testing several different products including Outdoor units"

The sound of a "protected" out door unit sounds good.

With the wind storms we get it would need to be protected well. lol

You can find the location of you closest clear antenna tower at antennasearch.com and look at antenna results, not tower results.

Well. That link is super cool! Thanks.

According to this link the clearwire tower is 4 miles from me. There is a Nextel tower 1.8 miles from me. The Clear tech support said that the Nextel tower is the tower I am connected to. So not sure what is up with that?

Sprint and Clearwire joined forces to create CLEAR. Since Nextel is owned by Sprint, it's not unusual to find that CLEAR towers are actually Sprint/Nextel towers. Incidentally, When Sprint advertises 4G, it's the same 4G you get with CLEAR. Just dropping my 2 cents.

And like q21701 said, click the antenna, not tower.
