My Router and Switch
Sometimes it is the router. I've bumped into some really sh*tty routers in the past. Even the latest ones can't handle the amount of connections I put it through.

..which is the reason I built ours (see above and below). It's been handling the massive torture I put it though daily. I download rather large files and updates, along with torrenting Linux/BSD discs. It takes it and wants more.

If people want a more reliable router, build your own. Intel Atom systems are getting cheaper (or find an old PC), and a pair of network cards and you're good to go for an excessively LONG time. Already have a wireless router? Disable DHCP on it, give it a static IP (x.x.x.2) and tie it into your switch (use the LAN port, not the WAN port).
