Re: IP-DSLAM FAQ

As always, it depends on what you want to do. Wireless "n" will give better range, by and large, so if you have trouble with the signal reaching throughout your house, go for it. If you copy files wirelessly among your computers for streaming video and music or just backups to a file share, it will be way faster. If all you are doing is using the internet, you are wasting your money.

What are you planning to use it for?

I am considering U-Verse, as I am kind of far from my CO (13,300 feet.) I cannot get very much speed on regular ADSL (about 2.5 down.) I am wondering a couple of things:

1. What kind of distance from the origination point (VRAD or CO?) is going to allow me to get the speeds advertised with U-Verse? I'm looking at the 12 down speed.

2. Why is a tech installation required if I go for the 18 or 24 down, but not if I got for the 12 or lower? What is different?

Thanks.

I watch youtube videos, upload youtube videos, I watch movies on Netflix on my Xbox 360, and play Xbox Live games along with regular web surfing too.

Got it, you are only using wireless to access the internet. In that case, I'd save your money unless you have poor coverage in your house.

I do backups wirelessly within my house, among other file sharing, to a shared network disk, and the "n" speed makes a big difference, so it was worth it for me.

I forgot to mention that I download contents from the Xbox Live Marketplace too. Some of these downloads can be at least 1GB. My Xbox 360 is connected wirelessly to the router. I have a 2wire 2701HG_B. I also get disconnects when playing BFBC2 and it's the only game that it does that to.

Has anybody been able to go from interleave provisioning to Fast Path? Is it as easy as calling tech support, getting tier 2, and asking for it?

Additionally, would the following numbers be good enough? Generally, what should one look for in signal numbers such as the ones below for it to be good enough for fast path?

Rx Tx
140 Current Rate 5360 765
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate 12688 976
144 Current ATTN DR 6200 1095
145 Current SNRM 3.5 12.4
146 Current LATN 48.9 31.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 19.0 12.1

thanks!

Does anyone know if Max 12 requires a tech install?

What exactly does this mean? I just got IP-DSLAM, and never heard of this.

It is the DSL replacement. The new name is IP-DSL the marketing people did not like the SLAM in DSLAM. It may be from the CO or RT. They are now turning up RT IP-DSL everything is the same except the cards.

The main reason it to begin the process of turning the ATM DSL system down and changing to IP-DSL.

Max 12 doesn't. Max 18 does.

I'm still on ADSL and the highest I can get is 3/512 but say they put me on ADSL2+ is it possible that they can offer faster speed, or will it be the same as on ADSL?

What are the prices? Say I want to get Pro for $35, and no phone service, will that only be $35 or will it be higher?

For those that are on ADSL2+ will they eventually be on VDSL?

What the cap for ADSL2+ customers?

Did ATT phase out the 2Wire 2701HGV-B? I helped someone order Uverse PRO 3.0 and tried my 2Wire 2701HGV-B from a previous Uverse install. For some reason the 2Wire 2701HGV-B wouldn't sync but the newer 2Wire 3600HGV-B would.

It is IP-DSLAM from the CO, they don't have Uverse TV here. I had used the modem for Uverse Elite 6.0 up till May from the same CO fine but all I got was flashing DSL light and "seaching for DSL signal" from the modem.

Only reason i ask is typically 2210 and 2701 modems are used for IPDSLAM and 3600 3800 and 3801 are for FTTN and FTTP. Although 3801's have a known defect atm for FTTP's.

Almost. The 3600 is only used for FTTN -- not on FTTP. It has no red "Broadband" Ethernet port to connect to the ONT. Only 3800s/3801s can be used FTTP

And the bug on 3801s for FTTP is being corrected, and it is only a bug for IPTV -- causes no issues with Internet or VoIP

If you have a 3600, it is VDSL2 U-Verse aka FTTN, not ADSL2+ U-Verse, aka IPDSLAM (which uses either the Black Moto 2210 or the Silver & Black 2Wire 2701)

1Mb is the fastest upload available to ADSL2+. The 1.5 Mb upload is only available to VDSL customers.

No Uverse customer can get 32/5 for internet. 32/5 is the total bandwidth for internet, TV and phone.

You're on the fastest package available for ADSL2+. VDSL customers can get up 24/3.

IP-DSLAM U-Verse is ADSL2+ U-Verse; they are the same thing

Which modem do you have?

StLCardsFan

@sbcglobal.net

I have the black 2210-2-att1 modem and live in a highrise about 2 blocks from the arch, 2 blocks from Busch Stadium, and 2 blocks from the ATT tower (btw cubs lost 2 in a row here haha).

sync rate is 17,500kbs / 1024kbs. Thats generally ballpark of what it says and the tech guys say im about 3900 feet from the co.

St. louis waived most of the right-of-way issues ATT had and was promised fiber to each building (i guess uverse vdsl) and is kinda pissed and researching municipal fiber because of it.

I also know ATT is using 24mbit on the adsl in some markets...just why would they limit it to 1mbit up is beyond me really.

Charter has 60 and 100mbit down and 5-10mbit up in some neighborhoods.

The 24 Mbps Internet is only available via VDSL2 FTTN U-Verse service, for those that live close enough to the VRAD to qualify.

The 18 Mbps Internet is the fastest AT&T is selling via ADSL2+ IPDSLAM U-Verse, for those that live close enough to the CO

I don't understand why, as a visiting team, you would EVER pitch to Albert Pujols in Extra Innings, TWO DAYS IN A ROW?!?!?

StLCardsFan

@sbcglobal.net

well ... i cant think of the provider ATM ..but they are based in in the burbs there ... interlync i think is the name...they are offering 24mbit adsl via ATT in beta market ..so it is available there in chicagoland... i dunno what the up speeds aer.

18mbit is not gonna get it done ... nor is 1mbit... hell i had 1mbit up in 97.

I suggest to people they start pounding their city councils to build municipal fiber networks and throw att out to the waste side.

Lastly.. yeah i have no idea why any pitcher would pitch to King Albert in extra innings...Cubs are great at making bad decisions though.

I currently have Regular DSL with the following stats off my modem:

Downstream Path / Upstream Path
DSL Sync Rate (Kbits/Sec) 8128 / 512
SN Margin (dB) 12.50 / 12.00
Line Attenuation (dB) 20.50 / 13.00
CRC Errors 495 / 2

I am eligible to get i believe the 12 or 18 DSL package that are now available in my area as U-verse has been turned on in my area. I game alot and have great latency right now being on a fast profile. If I upgrade to one of the U-Verse package can I remain on a fast profile or will I be regulated to a interleaved profile. Right now everything works fine and as they say if it isn't broke do not fix it.

If you can get IPDSLAM ADSL2+ U-Verse, you will keep Fast Path.

If you end up getting FTTN VDSL2 U-Verse, you will lose the Fast Path and be switched to Interleave

Hi DSLR, I had a question about IP-DSLAM:

Speed tests - I'm looking to get more out of my slow DSL line, and wanted to see some real speed tests from those with 3mb or 6mb DSL IP-DSLAM. I see that there's no ATM overhead so that must help some. Not sure if there's no PPPOE overhead too. With the 6mb connection, I normally would get around 5.12-5.20, and with 3mb I'd get around 2.58-2.60. Trying to justify the switchover if I could see how much of a speed increase people are getting in the real world.

Thanks a bunch!

When I had "normal" Dry Loop ADSL Elite, I consistently got about 5.1/5.2 Mbps down. With Dry Loop U-Verse ADSL2+ IPDSLAM Elite, I get a pretty consistent 5.5-5.6 Mbps down.

So there is still some overhead, but it is not as much as the ATM/PPPoE traditional ADSL product

I don't quite understand why users aren't "Over Provisioned" to account for Overhead -- instead of provisioning Elite service right at 6 Mbps -- provision it @ 6.5 Mbps, to allow for the Overhead loss, so the user experience ends up much closer to the consistent advertised speed. Oh well.

Thank you. While I would have expected closer to the advertised rate, that's still a sizable increase
