 | Just got the Eastlink 100mbps... My first speedtest was a bit of a let down on the downstream .. 35mbps down / 4.95 mbps up....
but that was with my Gigabit router in the path .. I'm going to try and tweak it now to see what i can get. |

2 edits | Hopefully they gave you a new DOCSIS 3 modem before offering the package up to you as that looks close to the download limits of a DOSIS 2 modem. |

Would be nice if they would offer something in-between 15 Megabits and 100 Megabits. Awful big jump, what about a 50 Meg service.
Wanted more upload, but if it means paying well over twice the price to only get 4 Megabits more on upload, the price isn't very justifiable. |

Yeah they did, and actually after some tweaking I can get 40mbps down on the speedtests .. I'm getting the impression that these speedtests cannot measure higher speeds properly anyway because I was able to download the new nvidia driver @ 80mbps .. very impressed. |

 | reply to Doksis3 I also got this on Friday. I can max out the line (over 100Mb/s down, 4.5Mb/s up) in the middle of the night, if I'm not running any torrents. However, looks like they're still shaping torrents pretty significantly. Could also be because I'm in the middle of the city with lots of heavy users around.
The 250GB cap scares me a little. That's less than a megabit of constant usage. »www.google.ca/search?q=250+GB/month+in+Kb/s |

 | I wonder what kind of cap it is, I hope it's not one of those combined upload/download caps. That would make the 100 megabit package even more unappealing if that was the case. |
|
 | reply to Doksis3 I was so excited to hear Eastlink was rolling out DOCSIS3, only to be disappointed by the 250GB cap and $159.95 price tag.
I would assume the cap is combined upload/download, which is insane. Anybody using a 100 Mbps connection to even a quarter of it's potential will blow through that in no time at all.
I've transferred 355GB of data (»i44.tinypic.com/28a2j5v.png) over the past 30 days on my existing 15/1 connection, so a connection that is 5 - 7 times faster with a cap lower than my current usage just wouldn't make sense.
Here's to hoping they roll out an intermediate package in the future, or bump the 15 Mbps service up to 25 / 2 or that like. |

| I've asked them a couple times now if they were offering anything inbetween 100/5 and 15/1 and this was their response:
Currently there are no plans to make any changes with our EastLink internet service.
If you have any further questions kindly telephone us and one of our Customer Service Representatives will be happy to assist. Contact information for your area is available online at www.eastlink.ca.
Thank you, EastLink Customer Care
I think it's nothing more than bragging rights at this point, and with as many limitations they put on it they certainly won't be drawing in many 100 Mbps customers. Probably if not enough people bite, they will drop the price on it and then slap the same restrictions on the other plans so all the tiers have the same handicaps.
I could see limiting myself to 250GB a month, but a combined upload? Bah I'm not uploading photos to flickr to share with everyone online just to have it count to that limit.
Omg Eastlink 100, omg it's blazing fast with limitations! Woo :P |

 | reply to brockwood Hey the 250gb cap doesn't take effect till July... |

 | With with the same 250GB cap, I went for it as I usually use less than that, but still...most people who know what to do with their 15 Megabit connection, won't switch to it if they do a lot of downloading. |

Seeten join:2010-05-10 Dartmouth, NS | I'm not switching from my service, but its great for people looking for more speeds, that are not abusing newsgroups/torrents or otherwise downloading a massive pile of content a month. According to industry reports, less than 0.06% of all cable customers use more than 250gb of upload/download a month.
So, not to say I approve of the cap, but for most customers, it isnt a big deal, and speed isnt capped after you go over the cap, its just a charge. Further, no caps are in place until July or later. |

 | reply to Doksis3 you could try speedtest2.eastlink.ca . there is a 250 MB file you can download and may give a more accurate performance measure? |
|
 | reply to Seeten Just a charge? It's $1/gb, which is a bit ridiculous. Go 50gb over, fork over another $50... |
