Wow!

"applying for $350 million in federal stimulus funds to help them deploy 12 to 40 Mbps VDSL service to about half a million homes, schools, businesses and hospitals"
Was something about money being high but I suck at math so this isn't as interesting anymore...

Edit: Math...
Edit 2: Math again... Is it Friday yet?

while the math was off and you are only including the money from the fed stimulus and not what they stated which was actually higher than that (without looking wasnt it like 450mil to do those upgrades and they were requesting 350mil leaving them paying for 100mil on their own?.....something like that yeah).

the point you are trying to make (i think) is still pretty valid. do we really need the government spending $700 on a group of roughly 500,000 people specifically because their phone company sucks? sorry to you folks affected by this, but face it, you wouldnt want the government to pay that much to a private company in my town simply because they suffered from poor management and chronic stupidity either.

if qwest really cant get the stuff installed because of the costs involved in it, then they need to either sell off or stop spending money fighting others trying to provide those services. either way, we dont need to be spending tax dollars to fix their stupidity.

I wonder how the $350 million compares to what they spent fighting locals from rolling their own services...

I would rather they spent the $700/household to lay out fiber.

$700 is too low. Try $1500 to $2000 for the areas Qwest serves. Unless you're talking about the Twin Cities, Denver or Phoenix.

I know. I'm just saying investing capital into an already obsolete technology is criminally inept. Rather reach half the total with true FTTH.

Would the half that are left without even VDSL agree?

id rather they spent the money somewhere with a company that was actually interested in providing services than any company that uses their funds for fighting unneeded legal battles that would not have mattered had they invested that same money in their aging infrastructure in the first place.

If its government money (tax dollars) we're spending then we should be using it efficiently. Why spend it on technology that needs to be upgraded in another 10 years?

Because it's TAXPAYER money, so the folks not getting covered are subsidizing the folks who do get the service.

Or we could just kill last mile broadband grants altogether...

In those areas they have mostly pushed fiber to the node. That is as far as it will go for any foreseeable future unless a friend of Ed's needs it further.

Since taxpayer money is generally used on projects that private industry won't take up effectively, long-term benefits should be considered instead of immediate ROI or cost.
