Re: Hotfile IS throttled!

Just adding my story here:

I just moved back home from university after enjoying my 40Mb/30Mb university line. My typical speeds were 3MBps from hotfile at any given time. Last night, at home on TekSavvy DSL, any download I tried via hotfile topped at ~30kBps which is the same cap as I get with torrents. I haven't tried other large file hosting sites since they cap free users anyways. Multiple downloads using multiple connections per download by means of a download manager still got capped at ~30kBps. A speedtest showed I had 4.6Mb download, and a download from sourceforge went at 200kBps so I thought there were just problems at the hotfile server. This morning around 9am, I tried the same files, and I got 400kBps. Now, in the evening at 8pm, supposedly peak hours, I'm getting topped at ~30kBps again for any number of connections with the same files from hotfile. Once again, the same file from sourceforge downloads at ~200kBps, and a speedtest shows that I'm at 5.7mb.

For the record, my friend on Rogers tried the same file and got a smooth 500kBps.

I am certain hotfile is throttled for me.

i used megaupload and rapidshare premium and i can assure you they are not throttled. i used them with rogers and teksavvy and they all cap the line speed.

torrents arent even throttled if you configure utorrent properly.

Yeah, I don't get throttled on megaupload or rapidshare either. Only hotfile, during the bell throttle hours. I don't use hotfile that often anyway, which is why I didn't notice the throttle earlier. And yes, I have a premium account on all of them.

What do you consider "properly"?

utp with forced encryption on port 1723 and disabled DHT?

For me this setup is throttled.

You can't control what ports other people use, so setting your port only affects inbound connections. A significant portion of your connections will still be throttled, but you might not notice it because you'll still have unthrottled connections. You'll be getting better than 30KB/s, but you may not be getting speeds as good as you could have.

With that setup, I consistently get up to 600KB/s, depending on the torrent of course (6M/800 fastpath), although I didn't disable DHT. I certainly haven't seen 30KB/s since I changed those settings, unless there's only a couple slow peers that manage to add up to 30KB/s by fluke Don't know why it wouldn't work for you. It's like the throttling is gone. I've been downloading a bunch of stuff 24/7 the last couple of weeks, and it's pretty much maxing out my connection day and night. I can't wait till their done so I can let my modem rest again. I'm not usually a bandwidth hog ... lol.

Hi I'm getting throttled with hotfile as well. I'm pretty much a complete noob and I saw that people are using different ports to get around throttles? If anyone could tell me if this is possible to get around the hotfile throttle that would be great! I am using Flashget as my download manager if that has anything that I need to change in it. It's not too much of a big deal for me to download stuff between 2am and 4pm, but I'd like to get something fast sometimes during the day.

Are you paying for the full service? If you are not, then you don't really have a reason to complain. All of these upload sites throttle the free users in some manner. I have been using MU for a long time as a paid customer and I can saturate my line at any time of day. I can't say the same for the other sites, but bell doesn't throttle MU, so why should they throttle other sites?
I don't believe they throttle http traffic..(or have any reason to..)

If you are a free user of these sites, then you have no right to complain

Nope, I have a full year membership with hotfile. I used to pay for rapidshare, but they don't have unlimited bandwith like hotfile does. But I am premium with hotfile.

Just chiming in to say that uTP pretty much bypasses throttling for me as well ever since the uTorrent 1.8 releases. If I turn it off during throttling hours, I'm down to 30KB/s but with it on, I can easily max out my connection.

all those utp clients are bandwidth \hogs and thusly all except the latest release of utorrent is banned
HOWEVER you lose that lil hide process ability after 1.8.1 so thats the trade off
and UTP really didnt get stupid until the version 2 utorrent

Igor_m, I am not sure who you're directing that to, but I do have a premium account at hotfile, and so does at least 1 other guy who posted. I even mentioned it at least twice throughout posts on this thread. And although I agree that hotfile sucks (which is why I try to avoid using them when RS or MU links are available), they have done nothing wrong in providing me with the premium service. It IS Bell that is throttling this service, and you would know that if you had bothered reading my post beyond the topic title. There is a mountain of evidence, not just by me, but by others who have tested at the same time with a cable and DSL connection during throttle hours.

kovy, I'm not a big fan of hotfile, and megaupload isn't thottled for me either. However, after what I've seen with Bell and hotfile, I wouldn't be surprised if Bell decided to throttle megaupload or is even doing it in certain areas right now. Maybe they're doing it to hotfile now because there are a very large number of links on there, due to people trying to make money from hotfile with their uploads. Making money on MU is not as easy.

I get throttled on Hotfile.com. The throttling begins at 4:30pm and ends at 2:00am EST each day, and the speed drops to 30-60k from 500K+.

I've contacted Bell Canada at assistance@symptatico.com (4 communications at this email), and at 1-877-317-3382 and 1-800-773-2121. I'm not even with Bell Canada but with Acanac.com and Bell Canada provides the backbone for Acanac.com.

I've spoken with the CRTC, and they told me to contact Bell at 1-877- 317-3382 . I've now verified from Acanac.com and and Hotfile.com that they are not doing any throttling. So, now, it's back to the CRTC and they will open an investigation with a telecom technician, and possibly get a 3-way conversation going between Bell and myself, since Bell Canada can't admit to me that they are throttling hotfile.com.

Incidentally, they aren't suppose to be throttling non-peer-to-peer address, nor be doing it this way for unlimited users, or doing it without informing them. This throttling invades privacy, and is throttling on HTML files form hotfile.com.
