 | said by Roundel:did they not have zip codes back then? Zip codes began around 1962 or 1964, I believe. My girlfriend picks on me for being as old as pantyhose, disposable diapers, and zip codes all the time. Not my fault she's 14. Years younger than me, that is. |

OCPPremium join:2004-10-11 USA | reply to Oleg It looks like they were looking for beta particles from the way the technician was holding the GM tube. If the clicking sound is coming from the Geiger counter, then the level is very low. I would guess about 100 counts per minute. The spokesperson says it was made just radioactive enough... Assuming she didn't leave the radioactive dust on her skin for hours she got less than the dose from 1 dental x-ray. And the x-ray is far more penetrating than beta radiation. I'm making a lot of assumptions.
People get all freaked out by exposure to low level radioactivity and they wouldn't even know about it if there wasn't something to measure it with. |

ShamayimI already have a Messiah.Premium join:2002-09-23 2 edits | reply to Roundel said by Roundel:did they not have zip codes back then? No, they had 2-digit "zone numbers."
In NYC, at least, you really didn't need to use them when addressing a rental box number, just as long as the post office "station" was mentioned in the address as it is in the commercial.
Zone numbers appeared between the city/town/borough and the state. You'd write it like this: Bronx, 68, New York
Each post office station had its own 2-digit zone number associated with it, and any mailman worth his salt (old 50's expression) knew them by heart. In fact knowing which zone number = which station was part of the "mailman" test.
edit: btw don't be startled at the radioactive gimmick. The 'geiger counter' noise you hear is probably and sound man going "click-click-click" into the microphone -- Who is Jesus? and Why it matters (to YOU).

| Zone numbers could also be one digit---
For example: New York 7, NY would correspond to today's New York, NY 10007
-------------------------------
The ZIP in ZIP Code was an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan.
ZIP Codes were introduced in 1963, then the longer ZIP+4 format was introduced in 1983. |
