[IE] Internet Explorer and Animated Gif

IE8 goes to 100% cpu usage on an animated gif. MS will not addressed the problem.
Only fix for now is to turn off 'Play animations in web pages' in IE options > advanced.

It is strange when linked to this thread the animation is much larger. Does it cause the same CPU usage in this thread? Could there be some sorta compression issue?

From this Dec 2009 cached link, MS does know about the problem.

Maybe the next update there will be a fix.

Thank you for submitting your feedback on Internet Explorer 8. The information in this bug has been reviewed carefully by the team and will help inform future releases of Internet Explorer. We are now closing down the Internet Explorer 8 Feedback Program in preparation for soliciting feedback for our next version and as such, per the Microsoft Connect guidelines, all remaining bugs for IE8 will be resolved as “Postponed” for now. When the feedback program for the next release is ready, we will look at transferring this bug, along with any applicable status update.

Thanks again for all your support and feedback.

The IE Team

On my IE7, the task manager shows 1%-14% CPU usage on the link you provided.
When viewing in this thread the CPU is only 1% - 3%.

Your post takes about 100% of CPU usage in IE7. But mine CPU is old an weak . Turning off animated pictures is not a good option for me. How I suppose to watch your nice avatars then . Setting IE priority to level 4 helps to mitigate the problem (while not solving it).

BTW, FF v.3.6 certainly does a better job, even with mine processor (it takes less CPU and renders significantly better picture at the same time). IE developers should look at the problem... There could be a fix.

I just discovered that if the animated gif is visible in the background, when I am running Task Manager, the CPU usage is higher. If I scroll up to the top of this thread, and can't see the gif in the background when running Task Mgr, the CPU usage is lower.

When the gif is visible on this page my CPU is around 15% to 35%. When I scroll up and can't see the gif it drops to 1%-3%.

On the other link ,with the smaller gif visible in the background, the CPU usage is about 10% lower. So I don't think it is a compression issue.

Yes, graphics engine works on visible regions only (in simple words - if it visible - it requires processing, if it's not visible - it does not). Thanks for sharing your experience.

Your CPU is certainly more powerful. Thus you see CPU usage around 15-35% on this page. Have you tried to watch the page with FF or any other browsers?

Under a solution I did not mean user should buy a more powerful CPU. At first look I thought that high CPU usage is inevitable here. But watching that other browsers can do a better job - there is potential for IE to improve its core to catch up with others... And that would be a solution.

No, I once tried FF and Chrome and didn't like them.
I am using IE8 at work. On Monday I will visit this thread and check my CPU usage on my work machine.

HP G71-340US laptop, Win 7 64-bit, IE 8 64-bit (or 32-bit, didn't make any difference), 2.2 GHz dual processor: 80-90% on one processor, 10-20% on the other.

Same, but using Firefox: 20-30% on one processor, 10-20% on the other.

Just installed all MS service today so system is up-to-date.

justin9876 See Profile thanks for comparison. 80-90% is close to 100% at which point some (or even many) frames in animation become dropped (and that's what I see if I watch it with IE7). While with 20-30% of CPU usage (as you mentioned with FF) it could be not the case and all frames could be rendered correctly. That's why I've said that I saw a "better quality" in FF 3.6 (most of frames are in place as expected) then in IE7 (many frames are gone).

bangaroo See Profile - thanks for reporting back.
You may want to try another browser running on the same computer and compare. E.g. Firefox 3.6 does a better job for me...

On this page, focused on the airplane image

IE8 jumps around between 12 - 23% (approx). Pic was smooth.

Safari 4 was on par with IE8 however the picture was choppy.

FF stays around 12% (I also have a lot of windows open). Pic was smooth.

I don't have chrome or opera installed at the moment.

edit: this is on Win7 w/ quad core processor. Results are per app in the task manager.

Here is IE7 on my Vista machine. Very low CPU usage.
IE8 on my work machine is flat line 100% CPU usage.
When I get a chance, I will check it out on my wife's XP IE6 machine,
