2WireMRTG.exe and 2WireRealtime.exe

For those who have the new v6.1.9.24 firmware for their 2Wire 3800HGV router (the U-Verse RG), I have created two tools that can be used to retrieve information from the router.

2WireMRTG.exe

2WireMRTG.exe is an external tool intended to be used with the Multi-Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) to graph parameters from a router, such as bandwidth, over time. Normally, MRTG requires that the router support SNMP in order to get statistics from it. The 2Wire 3800HGV router does not support SNMP, so normally MRTG cannot be used with it. However, 2WireMRTG.exe bridges this gap, and allows MRTG to query the 2Wire 3800HGV.

2WireMRTG.exe is downloadable from here.

I had previously wrote a different tool, 2WireData.exe that accomplished the same thing for the older RG firmware, but the new firmware broke that tool. This version replaces it for RGs with the newer firmware. This version has many new features, including the ability to retrieve a lot more different parameters from the RG, less complicated MRTG configuration, and with the new ability to get byte counts from any RG interface, you can now graph your separate Internet and IPTV data without using SNMP-capable switches.

The download contains a ReadMe file with full documentation.

2WireRealtime

2WireRealtime.exe is a second tool that is for those who do not want to set up MRTG or do not have a server to run it on. 2WireRealtime.exe is a stand-alone application to view data rates and information from the U-Verse RG. This program will not graph trends over time nor store data, but it will give instantaneous snapshots of activity on the RG.

This program is very easy to use, just download and double-click. The program does the rest. There is no installer, no registry entries are made.

There is an extensive ReadMe file that explains all the particulars of the statistics that are displayed.

2WireRealtime.exe is downloadable from here.

I'll play ....looks neat. A standalone program looks like a good idea for those of us who could run a server but don't want to.

Wow, thanks SomeJoe7777! This sounds like an awesome tool. I'm still on 5.29.135.47, but when I get the update, I may look into this, especially the standalone real-time tool.

Thank you so much!

Cool, I'll check it out when I get home. I like the fact that it appears to show the current usage from each port. That could come in handy for trouble shooting I would imagine.

I would but since my rg got swapped out back to the 5.x firmware

Well looks like it got updated this morning. I'll test out the new tools as well.

Hey, great job!

I have been following your work on Utalk and I have been using the standalone version since last Thursday on a FTTN connection without any issues.

Note: Jon, the tool is safe, try it you might like it ...

Wait, so I'm confused.
This is with one PC one TV and my PS3 playing online. Shouldn't the VDSL line show 3.8-ish?
If those numbers are correct then maybe it's time to think about upgrading. These couple of things are using most of my downstream.

Jon,

It looks like you were watching a TV channel on one STB connected via coax, and another TV connected via Ethernet port 3. Is this correct?

If so, were you watching the same channel on both TVs? If so, that is the result of multicast. A single (standard definition) stream is coming in via VDSL, and two duplicates of the stream are being sent to two STBs.

Okay sorry, port 3 is my basement TV. I didn't realize the STB was on. And I was counting the wrong way, top down. Which is why I thought 3 was my PS3.

So yeah..
Port 4 = PC
Port 3 = PC
Port 2 = PS3
Port 1 = PC

The other two TVs are coax and only one is on.

Think you could make another 2wireRealTime for the ADSL 2Wire 2701?

Sorry, but as I only have U-Verse, I only have access to a 3800HGV router. Since I don't have a 2701, it would not be practical to build an application for it, since I cannot design or troubleshoot without having access to the device.

I like the 2WireRealtime program. One thing I noticed is the program shows 0 FEC Rate but the RG page shows some FECs. I don't think the realtime program is picking these up. Everything else seems right on very nice to leave running on my second monitor keeping track of RG. Thanks for taking time to create this SomeJoe

It does pick up the FECs and CRCs, but the interface reports these errors as a rate in the units of errors per minute. The returned value is an integer.

This means that unless there were more than 60 errors on the error counts for that minute, the returned value will show 0.

In a future version I will change this to report the error rates to an accuracy of tenths of errors per minute. This will allow the value to be shown as 0.1 for example, which would pick up as few as 6 errors in the 1-minute period.

One other problem is that the error rates are computed from the error counts on the C_5_3 page. This page normally contains one entry in the Training History table of current connection parameters.

However, if there has been a retrain or disconnect/reconnect, then there are multiple entries in the Training History table. Right now, the program has a bug in it in that it is taking the error counts from the first entry in this table instead of the last entry, thus if there has been a retrain or disconnect/reconnect, the wrong error counts are being retrieved. I will also fix this in a future version.

Eventually I would also like to add a bitloading graph, similar to the ones you can get from dohrenburg.net.

This has been a very useful program so far! Thanks for making it.

I am noticing that the automatically finding the router does not seem to work for me (I'm using Realtime). However, manually entering works fine.

Automatic detection works properly when the computer you're using is connected directly to the 2Wire router (either wired or wireless), and your computer has only one network card.

If your computer has more than one network interface (including a VPN connection) or you have your own router in between your computer and the 2Wire router, you will need to uncheck the Automatic setting and type in the IP address manually.

v1.0.5.0 of 2WireRealtime.exe is now available. Use the download link in the first post of the thread.

Bug fixes and enhancements:

- Fixed bug that was causing VDSL lines that had undergone a retrain or line reset to not report the correct number of FEC and CRC errors.
- FEC and CRC error rates are now reported with an accuracy of tenths of an error per minute. Error rates as low as 6 errors per minute will now show up in the interface.
- Added bitloading graph.
- Added about box.
