how will this "option to flee" actually work out?

I think it will not be so much AT&T iPhone users fleeing to Verizon in rapid order. I think it will be more that new iPhone users will pick between Verizon and AT&T. Here's the logic:

1) Most obviously, an AT&T iPhone user can't move their existing iPhone to Verizon. So it's at least an equipment change.

2) The rumors are that the "CDMA iPhone" which will work on Verizon won't be available until the beginning of 4Q2010.

3) Most users would not move until their contracts ran out, or at least got to the point where the ETF wasn't prohibitive. So it's not like everyone's going to jump at once, anyway.

4) If, as Karl says, AT&T is actually improving their iPhone user experience (with Apple's help), they have at least six months before users even have the option to dump and jump. That's six more months of improvements. Many users will say, "Well, it's gotten better. No point going to all the trouble of getting a new phone and switching carriers."

In addition, the rumor is that the new advanced iPhone model (iPhone HD?) will only be AT&T. The iPhone for Verizon would be a variation of the existing iPhone 3GS.

That's six more months of improvements.
That also means a new iPhone this Spring that does enough to lock AT&T customers into long-term contracts...so yes. This June iPhone announcement will be all about AT&T retention....

With the number of android devices coming out, verizon really does not need the iphone that bad. I would say at this point, apple is going to need verizon more than it needs ATT.

Verizon is giving droids away and rapidly gaining marketshare.

ehhh... sorry to say, but in my opinion, it's hard to get the average iPhone user turned on by a droid.. I am one of them, for one.. and I do know many in my own circle that wanted to leave ATT and checked out the droids.. they decided that ATT was worth it to keep their iPhone..

As for Verizon gaining on the droid, I'd really like to see WHO is taking the droid.. I mean, like Sprint, Verizon really never had any 'great choice' for touch screen phones..

In my opinion, still, the droid needs to change (fix/correct) a few things before they can really be on the level of an iPhone.. for one, WHY did they make the wake up button the "end" button.. on my Hero, there is such a delay that I hit the end button to wake up the screen.. nothing happens.. I do it again thinking it isn't going to respond and I ended the calls.. they also need to fix that laggy keyboard.. then again, maybe it's just the HTC with that problem too.. meh.. I'll keep my two iPhones.

I have a Itouch and a Moto Droid. My Droid runs faster than my Itouch. There are no wake up issues with the Droid. Hitting the power button and it lights up in Seconds. When using WIFI as a comparison again my Droid plays video quicker and launching of websites.

What Iphone has going for it is the APP Store.

If you are a fan of running multiple apps that is not an option on the Iphone and is on Android.

Somewhat true. I went to the iPhone so I did not have to carry a cell phone and my iPod Touch at the same time.

And don't forget that AT&T's 3G network can do both data and voice at the same time. That's a big deal to some people (like me).

While I'm not opposed to a Verizon iPhone, I would want it along with AT&T. I can't stand Verizon, and I would not want to get their service. I love AT&T's coverage where I live- its perfectly fast and usable.

I am an iPhone user and I'm locked in until August 2011, at that point I will reevaluate my options, I'm actually pretty happy with AT&T, definitely not dissatisfied enough to drop another $299 on a similar 3G Verizon version of the iPhone, If LTE is available then Verizon could potentially get me back depending on the price.

I'll also have to see where the Android phones are at that point, I love my iphone but there are a few instances where I wish I wasn't so controlled by Apple and I know the device could do it if apple loosened their death grip for a second. Then again I love my iPhone polished UI, Android doesn't compare at this point.

At this point most people aren't turned by android, the way they are with the iPhone and comparing the 2 it's gonna take a lot of polish for Andriod to match ease of use and appeal of the iPhone, especially for non technical users.

So AT&T won't be down and out immediately but they are gonna have to buckle down, in fringe areas where verizon has 3G everywhere and AT&T is limited to edge, I'd expect massive defection for AT&T, regardless of etf's and device fees. I don't live in one of those areas.

By the time of Verizon's iPhone the multiple apps won't be an issue for comparison 4.0 is supposed to have multitasking, which I am impatiently waiting for.

I for the life of me can't figure out the use of talking and using data at the same time, and I'm a fairly technical user, but I don't like using speaker-phone, more correctly the people I'm talking to don't like speaker-phone, especially when your out the background is too noisy, maybe that's the difference.

Doesn't have to be speakerphone, can be a wired or BlueTooth headset. It's actually a really nice feature to be able to look something up or send/receive email while you're talking.

Doh, good point, I lost my bluetooth headset before getting my iPhone and I have bluetooth speakerphone in my car so I never bothered with another bluetooth.

I never wore the bluetooth headset, I know everyone has them, but I can't help my inner conviction that people look like a tool wearing those things lol

Even if they are useful

Most people look like tools anyway, bluetooth or not.

And by the way you don't have to freakin' leave them sticking in your ear. Put it on when your phone rings or when you need to make a call.

Androids are selling well and there is large market for smart phones, so it can appeal to anyone who does not have to have fruit on their phone.

I recently got an htc eris and it perform pretty well. It could use a faster processor, but it has good battelry life. There is never a lag when it wakes up.

ummmmm... are you talking the MOTO droid? or the "droid" phones in general... as I've seen, all the droids (that I've seen) all have the same bottom buttons.. so in the sense of the "hero" for example, you wake up the display by hitting the 'end call' button on the lower right..

And that's my point... the droid is, in my opinion, not really hitting the iPhone crowd.. it's drawing people into smart phones where there are no other real options. Think about it.. sprint, verizon, and tmo really don't have the best selections of phones.. the droid is, however, giving people a new option they really didn't have before.

Droid and Android are two different things. Yes I'm talking about Motorola Droid and no it doesn't have end button.

Android phones in my opinion are as good or better than the iphone at this point. It took a while for the market to catch up, but they have.

I have even heard of iphone people giving up their iphone for androids. The next rev of the iphone had better be a good upgrade or it will not be much competition for the androids that are hitting the market.
