Use free Google Voice in US

Why pay Vonage or some other VOIP provider when Google Voice supplies the same svc for free in the US and at lower cost for international calls?

Because with GV you still need an actual phone connected to a service provider.

I still prefer an actual phone and not being tied up to my PC.

+ Linksys PAP2T + phone handset

It's what I use at home. (actually, GV + sipgate + pap2t + 3 cordless handset pack)

SIPgate comes with a free phone number... probably one of those phone numbers that abuse the reciprocal compensation rules too.

Indeed. I have Google Voice (free) comboed with Yahoo Voice - 1.7 cpm and 2.75 a month for incoming number. Google Voice is additionally setup to ring the PC and cell phone at the time.

Had vonage for about 3 years but finally dropped them early last year. We went with just cell phones. Since having kids we've dropped cell phones and just use magic jack. Its cheap its easy and it works for a fraction of the cost of a cable voip package.

I did the same thing but because of the semi-rural area I live in cell service is somewhat spotty so I have the cheap google/yahoo combo to compensate for that. Use it little but it works great every time I do.

If you have POTS and even a satellite connection, it's a great free addition.

This weekend when I head to my unkle's house in the middle of nowhere I will have to tell him how to use his google voice on his satellite.
