AT&T vs Verizon

There are a few things people may miss. AT&T had the lowest churn in the industry long before the iPhone came out, so to claim it's because of "loyal" iPhone customers is balony.

Verizon's network is able to hold up so far because there isn't a device that is as used on the Verizon network that can suck up the bandwidth. Also, since AT&T had to show Apple how to make their phones actually work with a wireless network. This wasn't Apple's area of expertise as phones are just part of their business, while the likes of RIM, Motorola and Nokia are better at it because it IS their business. Once they figured out how to not overuse network resources for simple tasks, usage with the iPhone improved.

Most issues were iPhone users. Users of other smart phones didn't seem to have the problem. That would also point to issues on the phone rather than the network. Again, once AT&T showed Apple how to make the phone work on a wireless network, things improve. I bet once the next one comes out, it will improve further with better hardware.

One thing to think about also. Verizon's 3G network is CDMA, their 4G network is going to be LTE. They are not backward compatible. LTE, which AT&T are also going to is backward compatible with AT&T's 3G GSM network, therefore there is only a need for one 4G chip in the phone. While Verizon is starting to put out their 4G network this year, in order to use it, you'll either have to have 2 phones (with 2 numbers) or a phone with a 3G CDMA chip and a 4G LTE chip. This will add to space and weight. This is something Apple probably won't want to do. It will be at least 2014 before Verizon have a workable 4G network that you'll get around without a need for the 3G network, maybe even longer to rid themselves of their old 3G network. AT&T have the lead in which they can still have their 3G coverage while still expanding their 4G network. These will be things that Apple will be looking at for future versions of the iPhone.
