| Excuse me The 250GB in 5 hours is a load of crap. I hardly do 25GB a month that is with Hulu and Itunes. The only ones are left, are downloading psychopaths who deserve to have their cable cut and a trip to the library book section. As is read a book and get a life. My actual use is less than 18GB a month |

I wish providers were forced to list saturated use time in all advertisements - 5 hours would probably shame them into changing that policy very quickly. |

Nesis join:2009-06-12 Apollo Beach, FL 1 edit | reply to Scatcatpdx So downloading linux distros, playing games, downloading games via Steam, getting music via iTunes streaming media and sharing my connection with others in my household who do the same things makes me a psychopath? |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | I love how everyone always uses "linux distros" as an excuse... just how many times do you need to download that distro?
Music via iTunes, not a huge use. Playing games, not a huge use. downloading games, not a huge use.
You have to remember.. you're talking to a crowd here where many people know better. |

If anybody listened to you they would think bandwidth is fossil fuel. What a joke. |

Nesis join:2009-06-12 Apollo Beach, FL 3 edits | reply to fiberguy If I am using uTorrent to seed distros I can use quite a bit of bandwidth and can get me to a cap like that real quick. But there is no point in explaining that to you I suppose. |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | Nope... 1) it's irrelevant since you have an amount of BW to use - use it how you want. 2) Prior to this, and to what we're talking about, any servers that were on the lines were not allowed. Personally, I"m just thankful that Comcast, unlike others such as COX, DIDN'T block certain inbound ports, such as 80. |

If you're going to keep downloading Linux distros over and over and over and over and over.. that's your problem.. deal with the rap in the end.
*I* never called anyone a thief... My post, that you obviously didn't read, was about people running to Linux every time.. that's for one.. and second, its pretty well shown that the people who were "abusing" the TOS were infact running BT servers and downloading a lot of stuff they didn't have rights to.
Further, say that 5% of all users were high users.. of those 5%, sure, a small percentage were probably doing a lot of heavy non-questionable downloading - honorable use. But, it's funny when the fingers start getting pointed, 100% of that 5% would say they were doing nothing wrong..
Personally, I don't care - never had.. I don't break terms I agree to.. I read what I'm signing up for and I respect those rules.. I'm not a prick unlike many who have no respect for rules, right or wrong. However, I've never been affected like others.. so the 250gb cap means nothing to me and I'm glad it's there.
You guys keep bitching among yourselves and fight this war/battle you are here on the BBR battlefield - just keep thinking it's going to change the world.
Back to ignore with you. |

Nesis join:2009-06-12 Apollo Beach, FL 3 edits | reply to fiberguy What I did was provide a legit example of how one such as myself would reach that cap, nothing more. Some people seem to think if I reach cap x I must pirate everything.
My problem with the cap is that it restricts the flow of free information. Sitting back and saying nothing just lets them continue to restrict that flow. Even if our complaining in here goes unheard and the caps get more restricted and the prices more unaffordable at least I can say I spoke up. I am not yelling at anyone here and your opinions are your own.
Think of it like voting. If the guy you like least gets voted in and you didnt vote you have no right to complain. Am I right? |

Go worry about your own connection we can do just fine without the self proclaimed internet police. |

2 edits | reply to Nesis Your points are valid. For many Comcap represents a monopoly over their internet service. A premise of a cap is technically unnecessary, only there to impede future competition on their monopoly.
Lets have fiberguy explain this one to us: My cable provider is able to offer internet without caps when it competes against our local fiber provider, but implements caps in areas without competition.
I guess bits are able to be recycled when in the area of fiber optic cables, must be some strange law of physics. |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | Not really... I'm not going to be gagged, etc.. however, in the past, when I didn't agree with a rule or law, I didn't go on a site, daily, and bitch about it to try to change anything, or even think I was.
That way you change it is IN the political field... when I had a problem with a law in MN, I went to my rep and I worked in THAT area to change something.. and guess what, it worked.
Websites don't change the world... being active in politics does. |

Political activism would do zero in this case, as it is a policy set by a company, not a law enacted by a legislature. quite frankly I'm surprised even you don't know the difference.
DSLR IS , for the most of us, the only way to let comcap know how we feel, as the head of comcast has visited the site before. And his company monitors this site frequently. |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | reply to Nesis You are right about the voting thing.. I agree... those that don't vote, don't have a right to piss and moan.
But still.. what always gets me is the number of people that think they're making a difference HERE.. if they only took the time to put it where it NEEDED to be, some of this may not happen.. or happen as much. The voice needs to be heard directly, not by proxy. I'm curious how many people here REALLY push their representation? If it's that important, push them.. that's what they are there for.. your voice doesn't end after casting a ballot.
What I was saying about your example.. specifically Linux.. which is valid.. but how many distros do you really download? I used to work on Linux a lot, but I didn't re-download the same ones over and over.. I did it once, and then used the same files over and over.. but, even the ones who DO pirate will usually run to the Linux card off the bat.. |

As for politics. I do reach out to my representatives for certain issues however you have to think about the issue at hand here. We are talking about a companies policy not the governments policy. True I can sent emails to my representative attempting to explain the reason why there is no technical need for a cap and why I feel its bad for our economy and our citizens but do you honestly belive that they understand everything I am talking about? Do think they are really going to read a technical briefing about an ISPs network and go eureka! I now know what I must do?
Honestly do you know of any government official who goes home and uses what extra time they do have to play around with and learn about technology. As it is with most people its a tool they use but I doubt they understand how it works.
As DataRiker stated above for some this is the best place for them to actually reach out to an ISP and voice their concerns. |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | Okay... so then you said, and agreed, that you were violating the TOS of your service then.. Your "residential" service doesn't allow for you to run any kind of a server.. so thank you for stating that you were actually in violation of your TOS.. enough said there.
Also, as for what you said about business and politics.. it's not going to be both ways.. You can't force a private business to change because you say so.. and if you want to force change, then it's going to take regulation which can only be done politically.. still, a BBS website isn't going to make an impact. The ONLY way you can make a difference or speak loudly is to not do business with that company you don't agree with their policies.
You also don't give politicians any credit.. they're not all totally out of the picture.. don't think that they're all incapable of what the internet is.. and that you are the ones that are inclined to know better.. I'm sorry, but that makes you arrogant in your thinking on the surface.
Clearly, Obama is technically inclined.. and somehow, he made president of the U.S. - there are others.. and they don't have to KNOW how the internet works or understand it.. etc... when it comes down to it.. you see it as "the internet" but to everyone else, where it really matters, the "internet" is still "business" and that's what they look at... the job of the government is to ensure proper flow of commerce over state lines... well, that's just one of them. But, to them, and most business people, they're going to see caps and just wonder why.. if the business gives them a reason that works for THEM, then they're going to have to go on that as well.. not just your side.. business DOES have rights too you know. |

Nesis join:2009-06-12 Apollo Beach, FL 1 edit | reply to fiberguy How do you know I am violating my TOS? Do you know what ISP I am using when I have the torrent running? Do you know what package I am paying for? I only currently have FIOS listed. I posted to show my opposition to caps. Thats all.
You assume too much. I will end my comments to you here.
Thank you |
