1 edit | "Gygan". Next SuperDuperAwesomeness, vaporware, honeypot? File hosting service that wants you to populate their servers with your content so they can sell access to it.
• you have to install their app (yeah, right) • a freebie account gets 1GB DL/month (initial 4GB to create dependency) • content you up can be tagged as 'private' and they claim it will stay out of their searchable index (at least until they auto-rename your files and associate them with a bogus acct) • registered by Fusenet Inc. (Sinjay Singhal) of Ontario, Canada • gygan.com shares it's IP (174.143.33.66) with Pricist/MealChase.com and traceroutes to USA,TX (aggr113a.dfw1.rackspace.net). I dunno where the file hosting servers are (please tell us, oh brave tester person) • you have to install their app
Soooo, who wants to test it for us?
From a biz perspective it's a notable model in that content redundancy is avoided plus they control indexing - the two main curses RS, MU, etal must contend with. Of course installing their app makes this sillyland.

Some of the comments point out that it is quite expensive compared to RS or MU, and what with it being hosted in the US, it may not last very long once it gets noticed by the MAFIAA. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

 | reply to jap i cant imagine this application/site lasting very long if hosted in the states. there are enough of the rs-like clones out there as well where this just seems unnecessary. |

2 edits | reply to Doctor Four Yeah, that's the google hit (for an unrelated search) that alerted me to Gygan. Clearly their "article" is an advert to garner referral payments both by it's style and because no legit file sharing site would endorse such a scheme. A search for Gygan at TorrentFreaks didn't turn up anything.
As to the hosting location, my shallow digging only went as far as their pre-sales website. Did you go deeper and discover the operations location?
Feature wise what they have over the other so-called file lockers is in-house indexing. The others, AFAIK, outsource that risk via referral payments with dozens of operators making a mess of it. I don't use the things myself. Undoubtedly many who do become reasonably savvy at finding stuff. Still a sloppy landscape, IMO. |
