Speedstream 4100a (SBC Edition) Upgraded to Optus SS4200

I have a SBC (now AT&T) Speedstream 4100a that was flashed to the more generic Optus Speedstream 4200 firmware. The other generic firmwares would not flash. What worked was the Optus "Update_004-D240-A93.exe" It appears to be compressed using LYME_SFX. I was able to "UnLyme" it and extract the files, which was unhelpful. Although after the cross-upgrade, the feature set was greatly expanded, however, I've lost ack prioritization & the simplicity of the of SBC interface. I can access the CLI using telnet.

The Optus firmware does not have a web interface to accept the SBC/AT&T firmware.

Does anyone know the steps needed to flash back to the SBC/AT&T version 1.0.0.53 firmware from a generic firmware upgrade?

Perhaps there is an intermediate step I must perform, eg flash to another generic fimware that has the necessary facilities to downgrade back to the SBC/AT&T version 1.0.0.53 firmware thru a webgui... All SS4200 firmware are distributed in a self extracting/installing executable file. Or does anyone have the tool necessary for me to flash "005-D240-A5F-SBC53-4100.upg" back onto this modem?

tftp.exe was also tried without success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated from the experts who has done this already...

Thanks!

-Daniel

By the way, is the Speedstream 4100a, nearly identical to the Speedstream 4200? Some of the LEDs don't seem to behave normally after the flash upgrade to become an Optus SS4200.
Any solutions?

If you have a installation cd or a backup cd the software is on the cd
Here are some images of a speedstream 4200

What format is the SBC specific software on the CD? *.EXE or *.UPG?

A Yellow CD w/ "SBC Yahoo! DSL installe"r written on it. It has no firmware on it. It was initially upgraded using the WebUI using "005-D240-A5F-SBC53-4100.upg", then was later upgraded using Optus "Update_004-D240-A93.exe". 2Wire CDs seem to provide such firmware backup/restores, but not this SS4100a.

SS4200 Firmware was obtained at: »shadow.sentry.org/~trev/4200.html

Unlyme.pl (a Perl Script) (»unlyme.florz.de/) will decode the *.exe file into its constituent files. Not sure what steps to use in order to flash restore the *.upg file on the SS4100a. I can access the shell via telnet 10.1.1.1.

Modem is:
SpeedStream 4100
Ethernet ADSL Modem
Part Number: 060-D141-A12

The Optus firmware "Update_004-D240-A93.exe" does not seem to support webui based upgrading. Does anyone know how to "transplant" the "005-D240-A5F-SBC53-4100.upg" onto a Speedstream flasher?

That way, I think alot of people who has the complex/diffcult to use SS4100a/SS4200 (NOT compatible with the SS4100b) can GAIN a MUCH simpler & EASY to use interface with the added benefit of ACK Prioritization.

If all you want is the "ack prioritization & the simplicity of the of SBC interface" check out ebay any 5100b/4100/4100b has what you seek. The hybird 4x00 is not that difficult to set up for the at&t dsl network

Why did you load the 4200 software on the 4100 if ack prioritization and a simple interface were desired

The current backup cd has the firmware files

Yeah I was just testing it out to see if I'd like it or gain any speed/sensitivity, thought I'd be able to go back if necessary, but was not possible. Does any of those firmwares at: »shadow.sentry.org/~trev/4200.html

allow for *.upg updating? The generic one perhaps?

I think Optus only made small changes to the 4200 gui
Can you post a page from the optus software

The non branded 4200 software has no software update page
All 4200 updates I know of are exe files
speedstreams are plentiful and cheap on ebay and it sounds you could uae a spare modem

Here's the default Screen Shots, with only the PPPoE 8/35 changed to 0/35 for SBC/AT&T DSL to work.

Optus Bridge is I suppose is a half-bridge, but it does not pass the public ip address to my router, which SBC (PPP is on the modem setting) firmware does. A private ip 10.1.1.3 is passed to my router. I had to put it in Full Bridge mode in order to behave properly w/ my pfsense router.

Any ideas to how to flash upgrade ""005-D240-A5F-SBC53-4100.upg" back onto this router?

Also, which of the 4 Optus firmware listed by the ABOVE screen capture is the latest?

Thanks for posting the images
Your comment about full bridge mode made me check some 5100a htm files

Here's a couple url's for you to try
/ipp_config.htm
/updatelocal.htm

Add the above text to the speedstream ip address
If they work post the screen shots

If you didn't back up the firmware files before flashing, then there is no way I know of to restore the original firmware now.

Hi wayjac,

Here's the screenshots.. I attempted an upgrade to the SBC "005-D240-A5F-SBC53-4100.upg" file via "/updatelocal.htm" and the 3rd screen shows what happened. Afterwords, I can no longer connect to the internet, as I suspect a possible firmware corruption. Luckily I can still access the webui. I then ran all 4 of the Optus firmware without success. Finally I decoded all known SS4200 firmware I had (BigPong, Open Optus, and TransACT-Generic). Only Open & TransACT-Generic were un-encoded "firmware.fwp" as I didn't want to take anymore chances. So I flashed the "firmware.fwp" file from Siemens_4200Generic (004-D240-A2Y). It was successful. Whew... Took nearly 2 hours for me to fix it

Doctor Olds,
I now realize this, I should have backed it up before flash upgrading it, but at the time I didn't know how to as there was no menu option for this, as I was still not particular familiar with the intricacies of the SS4100/4200 modems.

I'm assuming I should have followed this faq:
»SBC DSL FAQ »How can I access the Speedsteam modem's CLI?

And finally, follow these instructions to backup the firmware?

The modem originally had v1.0.0.48, which I later upgraded to v1.0.0.53.

Strangely, the SBC firmware does NOT have the
x.cfg
x.def
x.img
x-boot.img
files that ALL the other *.exe files will have after a flash.

Do you or anyone else by any chance have a firmware backup file sets of a "SpeedStream 4100 Ethernet ADSL Modem"
Part Number: 060-D141-A12
(Does NOT have a USB port)
and most importantly, instructions, for me to use to restore the modem back to before. Either v1.0.0.48 or v1.0.0.53 would be OK.

Thanks...

Yes, you would have needed to back up the Firmware using FTP before flashing.

No 4100's have a USB port as that is a 4200 feature.

The FWP file has all the "x" files in it.

You should have no problem matching all of the 4100 configuration settings with the 4200 software
Linux should support qos/"ack prioritization"

This may not matter to you
4100 software versions
v1.0.0.48 and v1.0.0.63 are factory build versions

Hi, wajac,

I do not have v1.0.0.63, as this is only a SS4100a, I only have the v1.0.0.53 firmware.

For the generic Siemens Firmware, is "Siemens 4200Generic_004-D240-A2Y" the latest? It has PPPoE 0/35 as its default, which is compatible w/ AT&T DSL. Others have 8/35 or 8/33 etc...

btw, how do I make it behave like the SBC 4100a modem (PPPoE on the modem Mode of operations)? Where the public ip is passed on to my router. This would be similar to the DMZ+ of 2wire, I guess.
thanks..
