Didn't VZW lock wifi out of some their smartphones? |

glinc join:2009-04-07 New York, NY | It doesn't switch to wi-fi when available. You'd still have to add it manually.
And no, most of the newest vzw smartphones have wi-fi now. |

| Si senor.
Medium non-voice usage (typically music) brings it down to sub 40% before 4pm, especially if I did my morning browsing on it (15-20 minutes). This is w/o location services, wifi off, decent signal. -- "And Tehuno said let there be haste, not mp5, and there was haste. All creatures of the world rejoiced." -WotLK Ch. 3.3.2 |

And anytime you access the Internet for the first time in session, and wifi is available, you are asked if you want to connect. Of you ask me, I like this feature a lot and it's also why I like the idea of lower data plan tiers or billing by the byte. I only use about 100mb of 3G data per month as most of my data is over WiFi. |

This is w/o location services, wifi off, decent signal. That's odd. After a day of heavy usage (browsing, email, maps, music) I'm usually down to 50% or so. I have wi-fi on all the time. I'd guess that you forcing wi-fi off is probably causing you MORE battery drain - the 3G connection gives you slower speeds and probably uses much more power.
I'm also finding more and more my phone will hop on my cableco's wifi when I'm out and about which is a bit spooky - I didn't realize the scope of their coverage. -- with every mistake we must surely be learning |

| Except I'm not surrounded by hotspots -- I don't live in a metro area at all. So having wifi on in a major city (NYC, for example) might end up being a boon to battery, however for someone like me who would be hours between hot spots, not so much. Even the folks at the local AT&T store recommend for people to turn their wifi off if they aren't sure there's a hotspot nearby. -- "And Tehuno said let there be haste, not mp5, and there was haste. Everyone has been over this before - 3G uses more power than WiFi. Yes, really. |

its annoying that i have to turn off my wifi just to keep my skype conversations going when i get near a mcdonalds. |

| reply to drew Even EDGE uses more than Wifi. let's see, about 20 mw transmit power vs up to 150 mw(and almost always higher than 20). Which do you think will drain the battery faster?
