Re: [CATV] beta testing It couldn't be terrible... rcnman just posted for NY volunteers. If it was atrocious, they wouldn't be trialing in another market. |

 | reply to jhlmsln since the NY beta tests are about to start I'm assuming that the DC launch is imminent?...I doubt every market needs to be beta tested before launching |

So with that said, If some of the DC beta testers want to comment I don't have an issue with that.

I guess the bad news is that the new HD interface has yet to be implemented on the RCN TiVos, but the good news is that the current interface works very well and isn't sluggish at all. From all I've read, the HD interface is still more or less a work in progress, and there are really only a few functions that utilize the new HD graphics at this point. I believe we were told that there will eventually be an update that adds the HD interface, along with a few other widgets.
The biggest surprise is probably how well VOD works. It is very fast and MUCH improved over the Motorola boxes. |

Migrating over to the HDUI is scheduled for late Q3, With it being so new we would rather see the retail area work thru the bugs and this allowed us to launch on the very stable classic interface.
And yes, I have to say the VOD interface thru the TiVo is a lot more response and more intuitive then the legacy motorola interface. The ability to quickly jump back into the portal and order another music video within seconds is soooo nice -- Jason Nealis, Sr. Director, Video Product and Video Operations |

1 edit | reply to rcnman During the DC TiVo Premiere (Series 4) field trial I've found there's alot to like about the RCN/TiVo:
The dual-stream M-Card/dual-tuner TiVo is a powerful combo when you combine the required cable system reconfiguration RCN has done to support VOD on the TiVo with the bushel of standard TiVo features. I'm glad RCN stepped up to the plate to partner with TiVo and make VOD on the TiVo a reality. They are the only major cable provider to so far do so and I hope it becomes the feather in their cap it should be following general release.
The TiVo Series 4 HDUI not withstanding, the legacy Series 3 UI is light-years ahead of the UI on the current Motorola boxes. It's faster, more powerful, and more visually appealing. Once TiVo works out the issues with making full, stable use of both cores on the Series 4 CPU and polishes their Flash coding skills, the finished HDUI will be a welcome addition.
Storage expansion is a breeze. I hung a 1TB WD My DVR Expander off the E-Sata port and it was plug-and-play to bring the HD recording capacity up to about 200 hours. A worthwhile $130 investment.
When you combine the TiVo with the TiVo Desktop software on PCs in your home, the box becomes a quite capable audio and video server.
We testers don't yet have access to the TiVo TCO website to use the remote web-based scheduling capabilities of the TiVo, but IMO this will just be the frosting on the cake once it's available.
Once the RCN TiVo goes live, my moto box will be making a hasty, final trip back to RCN.
