Now in my extensions in Firefox I have Java Console 6.0.17 Java Console 6.0.19 and Java Console 6.0.20. Is this a security risk having the two old versions there? Or should I just click disable on the older two. Thanks. -- N.W. |

A generally good thing to do is to download the new Java version, uninstall the older versions, then install the new version.
I'd recommend that you do this. Try uninstalling just the old versions. If any problems turn up then delete .20, then do a clean reinstall. |

It has an option for removing old versions. |

I had to use it to get rid of the old console (I also had the old and new console's listed), even after uninstalling the old version of Java in add/remove programs. The console uninstall button is greyed out in Firefox add ons.

 | reply to NervousWreck I was able to uninstall the older ones right in Firefox - not greyed out for me... odd. |

| reply to NervousWreck For XP, it's: 'Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/extensions'.
How many folders are there named {CAFEEFAC . . . . }?
But as far as any security risk-- if those older versions don't exist on your machine, the console extension isn't going to be able to use them or bring them up, regardless of what's listed in the Firefox Add-ons. |

1 edit | reply to NervousWreck For Vista and Windows 7 use 'Run As Administrator' to load Firefox. You should then be able to select 'Uninstall' for each Java Console you want to delete.
They should be deleted in XP. (at least they were on my XP Laptop) when the new version was installed. |

I do know I did it that way (off-line) this time. I can't recall what I did with update 19. -- In reality, there is no such thing as a clean human being. |

I know it wasn't a risk, it just bothered me that the old console was still there. I don't know why the uninstall buttons are greyed out (same on the newer console version).
I installed off line. -- Biden '05 On Nuclear Option: "I pray God when the Democrats take back control we don't make the kind of naked power grab you are doing."

*Edit- I just realized what I said above was already in the link you posted, Luna. Sorry about that. Good job.
said by rcdailey:I wonder whether it makes a difference if you use the off-line installation as opposed to installing it while Firefox is running? Other than installs that are intended to be done with the browser open, it's normally SOP to close any running programs when installing software. |

rcdaileyDragoonflyPremium join:2005-03-29 Rialto, CA | That's what I usually do, but I may have done the web install for update 19. Anyway, I did the install off-line for update 20 and when I look at the Addons in Firefox, I have an uninstall button available (not greyed-out) for the Java Console. I also have just the one console, but I believe that I had removed the Console previously. Frankly, there had been so much Java jiving lately that I'm no longer sure what I've done. -- In reality, there is no such thing as a clean human being. |

| reply to NervousWreck The older versions of the Java console can be deleted from the Firefox add-ons panel.
But Java STILL leaves a lot of older crap on the machine!
I recently found this program which works great at removing the old Java debris:
»raproducts.org/ (See the one called JavaRa)
It also gives a log of all the junk it has removed.
BTW, I have no connection with those guys. I have been posting (mostly on the VoIP forum) for almost 2 years. |
