None of the games you mentioned are really all that playable on HughesNet due to the fact there's a great deal of jitter on the connection. Even with pings of 1,000 MS+, the games would be playable. However, due to it being satellite-based, the connection likes to hiccup and jump around a lot (960ms -> 1271ms -> 1681ms -> 2250ms -> 984ms -> 1103ms, etc. etc.) creating random, unplayable conditions in which you rubber-band and warp around a lot. I will admit that two first-person shooters run fairly well under HughesNet: PlanetSide, due to how it handles connections, and Borderlands, which still plays less-than satisfactory, but you can actually run around and shoot things without a lot of bouncing around.
As mentioned above, Mario Kart 7 is pretty good on HughesNet! I will add that sometimes Red/Blue Shells take a couple seconds to hit their target and holding an item behind you may not always save you from being hit, and of course, depending on how close a race is, you may place one place, but get bumped down a place or two on the score screen. Otherwise, it works pretty darn well.
I haven't heard of two of the three last games you've mentioned, but I'm interested to know how they run on HughesNet.
That sucks. I was wanting to play those, too. Also, I wonder if Borderlands 2 will be able to play with Hughes Net.
MK7 is really amazing online. The only problems I have with MK7 is it not connecting to the internet and giving me an error code allot of the times.
I don't even know if I'll get to those 3 cuz I haven't downloaded them yet :P
Also, if you have been wondering if Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2 works online, I can test them sometime later. But I'll get right on those ASAP.
Left 4 Dead 2(A little playable to an Extent)- I only played survival with 4 other people and the connection was only 1 bar and my ping was 992. I haven't tried it with any friends or in a smaller group.
Portal 2(Unplayable) - I try to connect with another user and it connects, but it will load and then will say "Waiting for partner..." and it will give a error saying "Disconnected from Server". I'm not sure if its playable with anyone closer or with a friend.
My friend and I played 3 matches on MW3 last night once I got my NAT type down to moderate. I had 1 bar the whole game and lagged so bad I couldn't kill him. Also, I can confirm that IMVU works with turbo page disabled and that Killzone 3 works sometimes.

I have an Update for Portal 2.
ITS SOMEWHAT PLAYABLE. I finally connected to the server and got to play Co - op, yet, If your the host, you wont get much lag, but the other person will. Same way around, if you join, you'll lag like crazy. I don't know about 2 hughes net players playing together.
Left 4 Dead is still Left for Dead.
Anyway, Today I might test if Co - Op on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for Xbox 360 for campaign. Not sure about the results, but its worth trying.
I can also try other games out, too. Just give me a few days. I have to see if my friend wants to.
Here is Toon Town's result:
Toon Town(Almost Fully Playable): Actually, it works! Just a bit of lag here and there. Just don't expect to win some of the Trolly games. :l
Man... You are getting much better results than I ever have on HughesNet. You must have a perfectly clear shot at the horizon where you live. As of late, my connection to any given game has had roughly double the ping I used to get. (Around 2,000 ms, up from roughly 900 ms-1,200 ms.) I'm kind of jealous. XD

...really? Wow. Okay, I live in Ohio and yeah, Its pretty clear view where its pointing, not a tree blocking it. So yeah, I guess I'm just lucky.
Didn't get the chance to try CEA today. Probably Tuesday or Wednesday.
OK i've just now found this gem of a board and i havent seen the one game i still play on here.
-Phantasy Star online Blueburst as far as how well it works..it used to work great (given the few seconds of lag to pickup item drops and such, but i could deal with that) and since i want to say around mid year of 2010 ive had so much trouble.
Before 2010 mid year: i could log on almost every atempt no problem though it took a good minute to get to the character selection screen but was constant.
After 2010 mid year : Between the hours of 5pm-10pm cst i can log on fairly easily (within 5 attempts or so) however if i play in a room with more than one other person i will disconnect usually.
Also if i try to log on any other time of the day...i could be sitting here for hours trying to do so (yes i have sat here before and tried to log on constantly for 3 1/2 hours and finally got on.
So i am wondering if anyone else can test this for me? The server i play on (the only one really still alive) is PSOBB schtak i would greatly apreciate this being tested.
Hoever i am getting a new modem in a few days (yet another 9000) as this one is currently restarting for no aparent reason.
CEA isn't going to come yet, but at a later date. Have results for Sonic Generations
Sonic Generations(Fully Playable): Not that surprising, seeing as how the game doesn't have a matchmaking more of any sorts. But if you go to one of the options (Not the 30 second one) it will lode for EVERY one. That means to get to Planet Wisp, Its going to take you, like, 5 minuets.
What other games should I try? Also, I have a Linksys router, is that why my connection is apparently somewhat good?

- Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst, SCHTHack server (Fully Playable*) -- Strangely enough, this game is completely and fully playable under HughesNet -- at the very least, in One Person mode. The only snags I've experienced are a delay when picking up items and the occasional failure to log in. (The game gets stuck on the code screen after updating.) As for in-game, the game seems to compensate for you hitting enemies and vice versa just fine, so the game works. ... provided the SCHTHack people can keep their servers up and running for more than a day at a time. They've apparently screwed something up in their latest update so it closes web browsers and blocks the "play as an NPC" program now. It's all very depressing. Nevermind, that's all been resolved. The game is working fine, aside from closing any program that has words like "cheat" or "trainer" in the window title. Regardless of what they are. Hah! -- ISP: HughesNet Satellite Internet Modem Model: HN9000 Service Plan: Grandfathered ProPlus -- 425 MB + 100 MB/day, 1050 MB total, 1.6 Mbps DL; 250 Kbps UL)
I should also mention something else about Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst on HughesNet. Don't try and multitask. The game doesn't like sharing a connection and if your ping gets above a certain point, it automatically bumps you off regardless of where you are or what you're doing.

Sucks right?
Well, for me it kind of jumps around.
You see, when I put in ping google.com, it gave me many mixed results, I tried it about 7 times. So basicly for me my ping is somewhat unstable. The lowest ping I could get was in the 800s and the highest is 1776. So yeah. :l
I also have Halo Reach here (Just matchmaking):
UNPLAYABLE. I can get into the matchmaking lobby, but the game will never be able to connect to a match.
We are aout to move from fiber optics to hughesnet, moving from the city to the country... Can you kindly suggest some LAN games since I will basicaly be giving up online gaming until Gen4. Will Gen4 live up to the hype? Will I actually be able to watch netflix? Thanks for your advice!
There isent much in LAN Games anymore sadly.. It's either Single Player / MMO.. But for my 2cents, If ya love Hack n Slash Dungeon Crawlers. Check out Torchlight 2, Online / Lan / Single + Modable for endless content. + It's only 15$-20$. Hard to pass up
Anyone know if Diablo 3 works on Hughes Net? Since WoW takes about 9 gb to download, how do people download WoW through their Satellites? It takes me about 2, or more days to even download 1 gb during the free early morning hours.

Diablo 3 player right here... yes it is playable through HughesNet but it seems as you go further into the game it gets worse (lag issues) .. At times you will have hard times defeating bosses cause it keeps giving you clutchy movements.. When playing singleplayer all alone you will be downloading least 2kbs worth of bandwidth most of the way off and on.
There will be times where you will easily get disconnected when sitting too long so you have to constantly keep moving in the game however either way you will still get disconnected if your moving around or not due to the lack of HughesNet's unstable servers.. Goodluck to you and try to have fun. -- HN7000S/ 1 watt/ pro plus edition/ 4 pc's on a D-Link wired router/ 1-2 pc's on wireless D-Link router with password
I will give it a try, and see if I can find a hard copy somewhere. I'm sure there's lots of updates to go with it though. Maybe I should start a Diablo 3 Satellite Internet Guild, so we can all go lag together. lol
Star Wars the Old Republic works well for me. i run about 1.5 seconds to 1.8 seconds of latency which can be delt with to a reasonable extent. you just have to be a tad more careful walkinga round and know that any action has about a .75 second delay before it engages on the server.
this run well until 4:30 to 5:30 pm CST. at that time the latency jumps way up to about 120 seconds to 180 seconds +. about 1030 ish at night it returns to normal. not sure why this happens. pretty well means you can play with your friends unless they can play during the day with you.
WoW should be fine, I played WoW up till cata. Between 2-7 you should beable to download 4-5 Gig's in one night, My brother and myself found using WoW's patcher to be rather slow and fail. Personaly i suggest you get a Resume program and Download the patches from Manual sites. That's by far the best way to patch on Satalite, Unless they changed all that in Cata.
I'v had enough and seen enough for an entire year.. I cannot stand the lag and i cannot stand the disconnections from blizzards servers.. I lag like crazy when trying to heal in an emergency and the enemies lag like crazy on the blizzards side when i walk one direction and quickly go an opposite direction.. its a huge bother and i cannot stand it. Its like a broken record player.. its like the same joke being told over and over.. WELL IT AIN"T FUNNY ANYMORE!! -- HN7000S/ 1 watt/ pro plus edition/ 4 pc's on a D-Link wired router/ 1-2 pc's on wireless D-Link router with password
I found a hard copy of D3 at a store near by. Installation was easy, and there wasn't any additional patches, or updates. My ping is right around 1200 to 2000, and there was always a consistent 2 to 3 second delay through out the game. The mobs were easy enough to kill that I as able to solo it. I didn't notice any disconnects, but I still haven't played it during peak hours as of yet. This game uses alot of mb, so I won't be able to be on for very long. The graphics is average, but still fun to grind. I'm not sure if the game was worth the 60 bucks, but maybe that will change when I get finally 4g broadband.
I will try to keep downloading WoW, I'm about half way there. Maybe in a couple of weeks it will finish downloading. lol
It's back up again for now. Has anyone tried using dialup for D3 or WoW? I've heard of people getting in the low 200 latency, which is still better than the average 1900 satellite latency. If there is any large patches, or updates then you could just switch back to satellite. Just a thought?
Dial up will work for WoW.. You will however not be able to do anything with 20+ Players, You may beable to get away with 10mans. Satalite vs Dial up.. It's a Lose lose, Hughesnet you can raid, With minor lag (Non peak hours) Dial up you can do Arena's / Solo / Small Partys way better. So its a toss up on how ya wanna play.
Yep, dialup.. It's slow and not really reliable but that's how I've been playing WoW for quite some time now. I can tell when I goto StormWind or some other big city as it lags some, but since I do mostly solo questing/leveling it mostly works out okay. Tony
