Sometimes I miss the days of punch cards, land lines, and glowing vacuum tubes.

he texting is very important with 10s of thousands of watts of music are being pumped and your're trying to find your friends, family, etc. Texting is extremly important, as a call most likely won't work. A Picture message can be invaluable as well for visual reference. -- -M

I don't want to seem like some sort of luddite. I would be lost without my BlackBerry. I keep tabs on a lot of what I have going on with it. Especially with having 2 jobs.
Considering the atmosphere of a music festival, I can see your point..... -- Petty people are disproportionally corrupted by petty power

| I am far from a luddite, but I just have this to say:
Oh whatever did we do in the world of music festivals before cell phones! Texting and picture messages are so very important! How did we cope... no.. how did we survive without them?
/sarcasm
It's not extremely important. It's not even important. A good pre-festival plan is extremely important. Things like, knowing where to meet if everyone gets split up, knowing where people will be and for how long, etc. Having the ability to text is useful, but far from important.

| 4 edits | Still not dire. In the old days going to big things like this people would make an agreement. "If we lose each other, lets meet by the car, the concession stands, the public toilets, or somewhere else, at 4:00." It worked. I've made it out of many large events in the past still very much alive, even without a cellphone.
Did we hear of anyone who perished at this event because their iPhone Facebook application couldn't publish a "I just ate a corndog and threw-up" update? I don't think so.

A Picture message can be invaluable as well for visual reference. So what you're ALSO saying is that technology has made people.. um.. STuPID then right? These events have gone on for decades WITH OUT cell phones. What did people do BEFORE we had them? ... they pre-planned.. they made sure they knew were the others would be when they split up.. they didn't have to rely on text messages or cell calls to find people. While it's VERY convenient to have that available, it still says a lot of people and how technology makes people stupid.
Not to bring up a dark day in this country, but 9/11 should have, if anything, woke people up to this fact. It was the fact that we place SOOO much importance on technology and we trust in it that was part of what got us in trouble. The people that took down 4 planes and a few buildings and pretty much threw this country into a mess ever since, did so why flying UNDER the level of technology.. yea, they used simple, basic methods and look at what THEY got done, with out the aide of technology.
So, if people can't go to an event and manipulate their way around with out needing to use a cell phone to do it, or send a picture message 'as point of reference' then I'm sorry, but people really are stupid.
By the way, if you have 10's of thousands of watts of music being pumped out... not only can you not hear a phone call, how are you supposed to hear an even harder to hear text message tone? Even on vibrate, I miss MANY text with just freeway or road noise and often miss the vibration of the phone as well.

| Re: Dire situation? I'd say stupid is a bad word, unprepared, maybe. People probably planned to TEXT if they got separated, but maybe didn't have a back-up plan for that....
And you don't have to hear or feel your phone to know you got a text. It you're separated and looking for a communication, you'll constantly look for a call or text, especially in that environment.
It may not be life or death, but that is how a lot of people plan. I don't think that is a knock on them if they don't plan on if they aren't able to use that. How many times have you said something along the lines of "If I can't find you, I'll call or text" did you always have a back-up plan if you couldn't do that? I can bet not, and if you did, you're just weird, lol. A back-up plan to a back-up plan every time is a bit OCD. -- -M
| | | | fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | Re: Dire situation? Ehhhh.. I wouldn't call it OCD.. I'd call it "plan B"... which, again too, isn't something all too unusual. I grew up in a time, and I'm only 37, where we'd say something like "I'll meet you back here by the X stand... and if you're not here, then I'll look for you over at X"... Same thing with people driving separate cars.. "I'll be at X at X time.. if you're not there by that time, then just head straight over to ... "
Same with finances.. if you're waiting for a tax refund, just say, in order to buy something.. you can't always count on that check to show up.. and in case it doesn't, and you're going to commit to something, most people will have a back up plan to THAT - or simply not commit.
Okay, so stupid, maybe not a fair word... lazy? Yes. Hey, what happens if you lose your phone? what happens if the battery dies? ..or in the case of any phone but the iPhone, and say your phone locks up or reboots.. I'd hate to be in a VERY large place and get lost from my group OR my ride.
When I'm in a large event, like I was Country Fest (or jam, what ever it was - I get the two confused) When I head off to the bathrooms, I always tell my group "wait here, I'll be back" .. and if they're not going to wait, not only do I question their lack of care, but I'll see if maybe I can hold on a little longer.
I do say that I'll call or text, etc. However, I also see a lot of people using that in WalMart even which, to me, is um, just wrong. How many times do you simply lose signal inside WalMart.. or not even know if there is going to be coverage when deep inside a mall? In those cases, sure, I'll say "Give me a call when you're done.. AND (there's that AND, or "plan B") if I don't hear from you, just meet me at the West Entrance by 4pm."..
Technology has the ability to fail, or not be there.. usually when you need it.
