Re: How sad.. Newsgroups Gone

Let's clear up a few misconceptions.

First, this is not the same deal regular Giganews customers might receive when they come to the website. The details are this:

•Diamond accounts: 2 months 50% off (best otherwise is 1 month, 50% off)
•All other accounts: 1 month, 50% off (no specials otherwise)
•All accounts: 10% lifetime discount (never offered before)

Second, the accounts are not limited in any way, specifically:

•Full, unlimited download speeds (not rate-limited, as with Cox's service)
•20 or 50 connections (not 4, as before)
•600+ days retention (not 30, as before -- note that our lowest level accounts only come with 30 days of retention)
•All groups (not a partial list, as before)
•Transfer limits from 3GB to Unlimited (not ~700MB, as the rate-limits ended up working out to before)

Third, the special will only be available for a limited time ("limited time offer"), but if you sign up during the limited time it's available, you'll get the discount as long as the account stays active ("lifetime"). The offer will be available at least through the time that Cox cuts off service, and probably for a few months after that. The only "restriction" is that this offer is for new accounts only.

I know a lot of people are complaining that Cox is taking away something that was previously free. Cox came to us, knowing that they were going to turn this off, and wanted their customers to get a break on the cost of a new account. It was important to them that customers get access to high-quality Usenet, which is why they chose us. Certainly, we know they could have gone to other providers, so we're flattered they chose us.

Cox stated that the lowest account starts at $2.99. With the special, it actually starts at $1.49, and the normal 10% special discount drops the normal monthly rate to $2.69/mo.

Cox is going to e-mail all their customers about the service cutoff and the deal, but for those Cox customers that don't check their Cox e-mail, you can use the link below.

GNphilip See Profile, thanks for stopping by and posting. I agree it was at least a nice touch for them to negotiate a better rate for their customers, rather than just pulling the plug and saying, well, you're on your own now.

Thanks for clearing things up. I thought that part of my monthly bill was going for the Usenet service. I never thought of it being a free service. My monthly bill goes up and services go down, of course I'm going to complain.

E-mail support@giganews.com. Tell them your story and we'll make it right. Mention my name in the e-mail in case they have any questions, since we don't regularly watch the Cox HSI forum.

Are Cox customers allowed to get the Platinum Plus Limited Time Offer $19.99 per month lifetime for unlimited transfer and 256-bit SSL and 50 connections?

How would you compare the above deal with the Cox offer of $26.99 per month (first 2 months @ $14.99) for the same service (plus VPN)?

Thanks.
