[ NJ] Christie kicking some butt in trenton

im very pleasantly surprised to see christie actually doing what i voted him to do. i really thought he was all talk during the general election (i didnt vote for him in the primary) but corzine wasn't an option. he has been a refreshing welcome to this state and i have no doubt that if he keeps it up the budget and debt will be under control in his 1st term. whether you agree with him or not, it takes some serious balls to slap the NJEA in the face like he has without backing down. theyre one of the strongest state lobbies in the country and instead of backing off, Christie's only gotten more determined to cut the deficit and undo much of the damage of the last...my entire lifetime.

I didn't like either Christie or Corzine when they were running for election but Christie seems to be doing better than I thought he would.

You guys are lucky to have a governor with balls who is not afraid to step on toes to get things done. In PA we have the demorat Rendell who is a do-nothing governor.

I like reading about all the good things Christie is doing and he will fix the Corzine screwups. Now you have to get rid of the 2 shitty senators in NJ. Good luck!

Just off the top of my head:

He's trying to cut funding for libraries by 75%.

He cut my town's education funding by 75%.

He raised NJ Transit fares by up to 45%. However, he pledged he will not increase gas taxes even though our gas tax hasn't been increased in about 25 years and is the third-lowest in the country.

He's cutting taxes for people who make over $400k. But he's raising taxes on poor people, insurance companies, and hospitals.

Just so it's clear, I think Corzine sucked, too. I wish we could have Bob Franks for governor, but he died earlier this month.

we have a huge deficit for this year and like $8 next year. NJ is one of the highest taxed states in the country. NJ has the highest property taxes in the country. public transportation is never, ever solvent and loses money every year. And you;re complaining that he isnt raising gas taxes?

Christie significantly cut state funds to schools, which is forcing schools to slash budgets. even with the imposed budget cuts, like 70% of school district budgets were voted down b/c they werent cut enough. that's twice as many as failed budget votes as normal. He wants to fully or partly privatize public transit and get that off the books. He's proposed a bill to limit state contributions to public employee healthcare and pensions and wants to break up or limit public union control and wages.

Well, I'd gladly take him for New York. We missed out on millions in federal educational aid because the idiots running the board of ed wanted to waste the money on high end offices they don't need and they are dead set against private schools (which are performing way better than public schools).

Please explain how cutting our town's school funding is going to reduce my property taxes.

If you look at what Chrstie did, he cut funding from the school systems that were operating the most efficiently. The more efficient your school system was, the bigger cut you got. If you had a rainy-day fund and held some money in reserve, he took it away. And he gave the money to the inefficient urban districts like Asbury Park, which already spends over $35,000 a year per pupil. Say that number again: over $35,000 per pupil.

In your analysis, keep in mind that state income taxes are constitutionally dedicated to property tax relief, and cannot be used for the state budget itself.

EDIT: As an aside:

said by Paul Mulshine :
...Christie spent most of that campaign dodging questions about just what he would do about property taxes.

The answer came when he took office, and it was not a pleasant one for the people of Morris County. The new governor cut state property tax relief aid to the county’s schools by an astounding 37 percent. Christie cut aid to Mendham Township by 99 percent.

"There’s a lot of buyer’s remorse in his own home town," said Merkt. "I have a lot of people coming up to me and saying, ‘I’m sorry I worked for that SOB in the election.'"

Bobcat, can you give the man a chance? At least he is doing SOMETHING. Corzine did squat except screw the NJEA lady and give the union everything they wanted and then some. I'll bet you voted for Obama too, right?

I'm glad Corzine is gone (I didn't vote for him), but Christie sucks.

Prop taxes are going to go higher and the schools will perform worse due to teacher layoffs and crowed classrooms = property values will fall. When your property value is in the toilet, he will have succeed in getting your taxes down!

NJ has massive, massive amounts of waste in education. NJEA member wages are outrageous and public pensions/benefits in general are 2 of the state's largest expenses. He issued reform to address these directly. he's squeezing the school districts to save money. he's more or less forcing them to layoff redundant positions, have earlier buy-out years. and force employees to contribute to benefits and the state less to pensions. how many other jobs give a guaranteed yearly 4-5% wage and salary increase merely for still being employed? hardly any outside of government jobs.

If a government is going to create and enforce anti-monopoly laws, it should apply them to public unions as well, as they are the definition of monopolistic.

christie capped the annual increase to property taxes. he did this for 2 reasons:
1- b/c our taxes are already the highest in the country
2- to keep school districts from proposing tax increases to go back to pre-christie school budgets. he wants school budgets lower to force schools to do more with less over the long-term and not just these 2-4 years.

Bullshit. Making $43k per year is outrageous? That's less than the $60k Christie's personal Tweeterer is paid!

So who is worth more? A teacher? Or someone who's job it is to post to Tweeter?

Not exactly do nothing. He implemented a 5% tax to Cell phone companies doing business in Pennsylvania. Then Cell Phone companies turn around charge the customer 5% fee for for this tax for doing business in PA. This is ontop of the 6% sales tax we pay.
Don't believe me take a look at your cell phone bill. And apparently no one cares about this to make a change.

I should also add the Rendell also killed Public TV in PA too. See he is doing alot even though it's so counter-productive and so disruptive to the lives of Pennsylvanians.
