Facebook "Instant Personalization" raises privacy issues

From: CBC Canada

Facebook's newest tools application, which allows users to see personalized versions of websites they visit elsewhere, is the latest change to the social networking site that is raising privacy concerns.

The "Instant Personalization" application allows users to see websites tailored to them based on their interests and social connections, as long as they are logged into Facebook.

The initial sites involved in the application are Yelp, Pandora and Microsoft Docs.

More are expected to join, Facebook said.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told developers at Wednesday's launch at a conference for web and software developers in San Francisco that the application will mean a more personalized, social, smarter web.

But internet analysts and Facebook users said the program violates their privacy.

Opting out possible
User after user has posted warnings on Facebook accounts about "Instant Personalization," calling it an invasion of privacy, and listing steps on how to opt out of the program, as all Facebook users are automatically signed into it by default.

"As of today, Facebook has a new privacy setting called 'Instant Personalization' that shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to 'Allow.' Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites, and uncheck 'Allow,' then repost this to your profile," is the common warning.

"How many people are really going to want all this information about them shared?" said Greg Sterling, an internet analyst who also writes for SearchEngineLand.com. "That's the big unanswered question here."

Sharon Machlis, online managing editor of ComputerWorld.com said users should have been warned that they would start seeing Facebook requests showing up when they visit other sites, even before they've logged into those sites.

"It's a safe bet this won't be the last time Facebook decides to troll through my data and come up with new ways of sharing," Machlis wrote Friday in her blog, Machlis Musings.

"I'm not sure I can trust them to understand that just because I'm using Facebook doesn't mean I want in on every partnership they make."

Thanks for that information, I agree with other users... as previously set up every application for the other sites added had to be opted out of individually which would have been practically impossible to keep up with. The "allow" or not is more global and THAT should have been added and told to facebook users before ever implemented. When on the site, my "allow" was NOT checked so I am hoping facebook got smart and didn't set it to be automatic though with all the un-checking on google and facebook I have done lately... could have done it myself and forgotten

ONLY IF YOU ALLOW THEM TO!!!!!!!

I have NO personal info on my FB pages. None. No home town, no phone number, no schools, no nothing. In fact, my info page is blank. And I don't friend people I don't know and I don't participate in applications/games.

Yet I am still able to connect with my family/friends with no problem.

Just another case of users being aware and taking proper precautions or not.

AND PLEASE STOP YELLING IN EVERY POST, it does nothing towards making your posts credible.

For some of us it is a great way to keep in touch with family. If you do not want personal info on it - then DON'T add it in. Simple as that.

Agreed, dandelion See Profile, like Google releasing a Beta API on the users with any prior disclosure, you have to face the proverbial music.

The Opt-Out is on by default

Is Facebook under the microsope ? It would seem so

People can't seem to figure out that simple concept.

Just like not clicking "YES!!" to everything is user responsibility, it's user responsibility to keep their FB pages safe. Some choose not to do that by giving out tons of info, and that is their choice.

I do get that. But FB seems intent on changing the rules as they see fit (or are regulated to doing), and as I never posted that often, I chose to just bid adieu. I phone family, and send pics via email when I want to update them. Gee, what a concept.

I was quite taken aback (and pissed) that when I was on CNN/Money the other day, I scrolled down to comments and saw my FB profile pic and user name, even though I didn't even have Facebook open in another tab.

I only keep a Facebook because I have an enormous family and it really makes it easy for everyone to keep track of what's going on. I don't have any private info on there, but I am starting to be slightly disturbed by their privacy issues.

Any website that has an external Facebook login policy automatically datamines you, thus your privacy is out the window.

At least with FB we can get a note out to lots of family without knowing individual email accounts. Gee - what a concept.

You don't know your family's email addies? Wow.

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to bust your butt here. I just feel we have other resources besides FB, MySpace etc.

Would opting out effect my status updates on Raptur and when I upload videos to youtube? I don't mind if it posts my Raptur updates on there automatically or my Youtube videos automatically, but I don't want to have some porn site send a status message on facebook, I have people on Facebook who don't condone porn. I wish there was a setting to choose what websites are allowed to automatically post status updates.

I can't answer your questions, unfortunately, Madtown See Profile, FB has a user community, I suggest you use it.

Like some, I only use FB to keep in touch with folks from the security community that I wouldn't normally see that often.

FB is a good tool, to an extent, but if the policy changes come every other week, there will be an exodus for some like myself.

Re: Facebook "Instant Personalization" raises privacy issues

I wonder if the BBB has any jurisdiction over Facebook? Is there anyone we can all e-mail or send a letter to, to let them know that we as the users of Facebook do value our privicy and we have a right to choose what we consider to be private.

For example, I might not want to share to everyone that I spend over 500 dollars on tupperware containers (yes that is excessive exaggerating) while maybe someone else who also spend 500 dollars on tupperware container might want to brag to everyone on Facebook that they did that.

No I don't have tupperware and I think it's stupid, I was just using that as an example.

If your referring to the BBB
»www.bbb.org/
No, they don't have 'jurisdiction' over facebook or anything for that matter.
That's a good thing too, if that's who you were referring to.
It wouldn't be good for anything with jurisdictional powers to have membership fees which only serve the purpose of turning a blind eye to it's member indiscretions.

They're providing the service as a business. They want to monetize it. If they can monetize privacy, they'll go for it. I can't imagine that they're doing Instant Personalization for free. If they were, they would have a global opt-out.
