Re: Facebook "Instant Personalization" raises privacy issues Not in my case or a lot of my contacts. The default was 'On'
Consumer affairs had an article about all this: 'Still, a confidential e-mail from Facebook to a number of advertisers, obtained by the digital marketing website ClickZ, suggests that the switch is, in fact, all about marketing.'

Perhaps when you and others looked it was ON, and TPTB changed it to OFF. What date/time did you check?
Anybody else seeing it ON as of Sunday, April 25, 9:15am EDT? -- »www.queenofcyberspace.com/usenet |

 | I went to facebook a few minutes ago and it was to "ON" for my account. I unchecked the "Allow" box immediately and also posted feedback to Facebook. |

Of course it is all about marketing - that is pretty much the only way have have to bring in money besides ads and ads don't pay enough. -- Brian

1 edit | reply to VR Laura said by VR Laura:You have to OPT-IN. It's OFF by default. The whole point behind the uproar here is that Facebook made this an "OPT-OUT" option by default. My guess is that the public has roared and Facebook cowered far enough to make it 'opt in' now? Not sure. I disabled it on my FB account and pasted the relevant info for how to disable it to my own account. As of yesterday, I still have friends thanking me for posting that. |

That said, FB has it's used. The video uploads are useful, and we use it to promote our HD productions and keep in touch with clients who are also on FB.

| Or, like some of us, don't be a part of the social network/marketing Facebook and not have an account. I get way too tired trying to keep track of what's secure and what isn't so have chosen the only way out...don't join and don't sweat it. Old, yes. Odd, maybe. |

| reply to Jim Gurd said by Jim Gurd:O.K. I did a little experiment to see what would happen. I went to yelp.com first. Nothing appeared from Facebook. Then I logged into Facebook and went back to yelp. It now showed my name and picture at the top. I went back to Facebook and logged out. I went back to yelp and my name and picture were no longer displayed. Bottom line, always log out of Facebook when you are done and never accept persistent cookies. Doing these things will completely avoid this issue. Excellent advice. However, merely opting-out prevented Yelp from displaying anything about me. Just sayin'. -- Pain is weakness leaving the body |
