I disagree. If you asked momma-baineschile if fiber was better, she would answer "well, if you are having trouble pooping..."

edit: MOST people dont know the difference, nor care. As long as their TV turns on, and their internet works, thats what matters to most consumers.

No, I'll have to agree with margaf77. If it didn't matter, they wouldn't be pushing fiber in their commercials and just focusing on (based on your post) reliability.

That is what I was thinking as well. It is obviously an issue for the cable companies or else they would not go down this vein of advertising.

Most people age under 60 or 70 associate fiber optic with technological advance. They've had a cable line for decades. They haven't had a fiber optic cable. Both are able to deliver similar services, but just the name alone associates with "better" for many.

Do they no the technical differences? No. Do they really care as long as it works and delivers as promised? No. Is there still a psychological perception brought on by marketing? Definitely. If there wasn't, it wouldn't be in the advertisements.

As long as their TV turns on, and their internet works, thats what matters to most consumers.
It's what matters most, but that's not all that matters either.

Do you understand how marketable fiber is? From a purely physical and aesthetic standpoint it is an extremely beautiful construction. The idea that it transfers "light" instead of electricity is also a wonderful tool for marketing. It's just so easy to advertise as being superior.

Exactly.... its just a sexy marketing bandwagon term that everybody's jumping on and some over-anxious clueless marketing guys are worried about getting left out. And because of all the fiber marketing everybody is doing I think common people automatically associate Fiber = Magic !

But is there misleading stuff going on? To some extent, yeah. The cable-co's can say they have an "Advanced Fiber Network" since they have been running an enormous HFC network for a long time... but as in the sample graphic above, that is crossing the line by saying they're actually giving me "fiber optics" without the hassle (should probably say something like "fiber-quality or fiber-like" to get out of hot water).

I think you are misunderstanding what people are trying to say.

The average person doesn't know the difference between fiber and copper technically. But in ads from Verizon they are told that fiber is better, but they are not told a technical reason why.

The cable companies are chiming in and saying "we have fiber in our network too" to try to knock down the Verizon marketing that fiber is better.

If people believe that fiber is better and only Verizon has fiber, then the Verizon marketing has worked. And those average people still don't know what fiber is really doing for them, just that it is better.

And coax is better than 26g twisted pair.. so, all those DSL lovers out there need to back down and shut the hell up too, right?

It doesn't matter if the person knows what fiber is, how it works, or what it's doing for them as long as they equate fiber with better/more advanced networks. And, that understanding comes from many other places than a Verizon ad. Most people around me understand fiber is 'better', but no one offers a fiber service all all. This is ATT/Comcast country.

The cable companies know this and it's not that they are saying we have fiber IN our network, they're leading the reasonable person to believe they have a fiber network period. They are not 'chiming in to say we have fiber in our network too'. If that were the case, there wouldn't be the stink.
