RickPremium,MVM join:2001-02-06 Waterbury, CT | Hold on just a minute.... Let's move past the terminology for a minute and look at who can really deliver what to consumers.
Verizon has taken the word fiber and made it synonymous with the latest in the fastest speeds that are out there.
Verizon however..has a huge part of their network that is still copper based dsl technology that Alexander Graham Bell could be proud of. And Verizon, based on news reports here at BBR..has all but even halted their Fios rollout.
The cable Co's use huge amounts of fiber as well in their networks. And have for years. Companies like Comcast have now completed apparently upwards of close to 90% of the nation with Docsis 3.0 technology..giving consumers 50 Mb speeds. Companies like Cablevision and their OOL service has long been noted on this website to be a real leader and innovator when it comes to the same and delivering the latest in speeds.
Moving past the buzz word for a minute..who REALLY deserves to be recognized for what they are giving consumers on the large scale across their service area?
I'm not going to say that Verizon doesn't. They did step up to the plate and make a big investment in their network. But a lot of their network isn't that either. Whereas a lot of the cable companies IS much better for consumers..in terms of speeds.
I just don't think that it's quite fair that Verizon gets to present it as they do..with the remainder of their network in the condition it's in..while the companies like Comcast who have taken 50Mb speeds across this entire country..but yet somehow have to justify their actions when it comes to talking about the fiber in THEIR network.
And lest anyone say I'm just a cable "fanboy"..I can also be critical of Time Warner...and say that they do need to step up to the plate and deliver a LOT more D3 to really justify THEIR actions.
But..I think that fair..is fair too. And certainly Cablevision has been a leader for many years in the speed race..and continues to be. And comcast has made a huge commitment to their subscribers in this country and deserve every bit as much as Verizon does to talk about their network in the latest and greatest terms as well.

| Re: Hold on just a minute.... Yes, You ARE a cable "fanboy" ... Please answer a question? How long did it take the cable co's to cover their entire footprint? Hmmmm.
All in all, FiOS is STILL in an infantile state. When Verizon catches up to their commitments to towns and city's, they will begin expanding again. Anyone who thinks they want to continue maintaining copper is FOOLISH.
People that think Vz has completely HALTED its buildout are WRONG. They are currently laying conduit/fiber in my neighborhood as we speak. The franchises agreement with my town is to pass all subs by 2013... and this costs big $$.

| Re: Hold on just a minute.... and you see VZ selling those areas that they don't want to upgrade. You don't see cable out doing that.
VZ just wants to have their cake and eat it too. VZ only has everyone covered with voice due to being required to by the Gov't. Cable built out on their own. VZ still gets a good chunk of money each month from USF to keep building out and maintaining that network. Cable doesn't and they still, yet, can upgrade and do. -- www.twopugsbrand.com Kosher, Vegan, and Organic Certified Dog and Cat treats/foods and other products!

| Re: Hold on just a minute.... the Telco's only started to upgrade their networks after Cable brought in their own services and when CLECs started to pop-up. The ILECs ran the CELCs into the ground and then bought up the networks so nobody else could compete with them.
Cable does only offer services to areas where they deem it is best. BUT you do NOT see them taking $$$ from Uncle Sam to do it with. VZ DOES. -- www.twopugsbrand.com Kosher, Vegan, and Organic Certified Dog and Cat treats/foods and other products!

| | | Less then a year for cablevision.
Cablevision flipped a switch and provided 101/15 speeds AND WIFI.
I didnt see verizon do that.
Ps Italian926 Just because they got the agreement means nothing. Lindenhurst village and the town of babylon both gave the go ahead but Verizon hasnt dont the whole town .
So verizon getting the agreement means nothing.

| Re: Hold on just a minute.... Tom , your replies are just like Cablevision commercials... completely misleading.. Cablevision wired up everyone is a year? When I lived in the Bronx, I remember LongIsland NY having cableTV like 5 years before us. What are you talking about 1 year?
You want to talk about wi-fi now? Cablevision commercials boast about how they are twice as fast as verizon's 3G internet. Completely ignoring the fact that finding a cablevision hotspot is like finding a needle in a haystack. Lets have a comparison of cablevision wifi coverage to verizons 3G now. LOL Im all over the place in NY and rarely do I see a cablevision hotspot.
Their 100 Meg service? Whos got that? Not many seem to know it costs $100 a month more with like a ridiculous $300 installation fee.
Cablevision is the shadiest advertising company in history ! lol

Most cable companies completed HFC rollouts in well under a decade, and technologies like DOCSIS 3 are rolling out for companies like Comcast across their entire footprint on a 2-year deployment timeline.

The problem with FiOS is that people aren't signing up. Adoption rates in 2008 were 16%, 2009 was closer to 20%, and this year I think they're only trending for 21% adoption. It's difficult to make money when only 1 out of every 5 homes you build for actually sign up.

They're going to fulfill their current contracts for buildouts and then retool to figure out how to make money on FiOS.

Absolutely right ! You are not a cable fanboy, but a Comcast cable fanboy, so you have no issue in bashing TW.

| The cable companies are not "giving" consumers anything. The prices are exorbitant. Also, the 50mbps speed is not even available, the best I could get is 30mbps, and the price is beyond ridiculous.
No, I don't think you are a cable fanboy, I think you are a Comcast employee.
