With subscription packages that VZ is selling today it is possible for end-users to saturate BPON, especially in the upstream direction. If you scan the FiOS forums there are still occasional slowdowns when Internet bandwidth to the CO becomes overwhelmed. FiOS is NOT 1:1 provisioned capacity from the customer to the Internet.
If the MSOs were pushed into it, they could cut down to the same 32 or 16 homes per segment that FiOS has today with GPON/BPON and deliver an equivalent customer experience. The only thing holding that back from happening is financial prudence and decisions to scale the network based on measured average demand. |
