@montanasat.net

looking at getting bresnan for internet and need info please

first does anyone here have it in kalispell montana? if so can you give me a speed test? thanks

ok, my main question is do you have to sign a contract? and can you pay monthly?

now can i have some reviews? thanks everyone, sorry for all the questions haha.

@bresnan.net

1st off, not in kalispell, but do live in billings and have speed plus with which i seem to consistently get about 10-13mbps through a router throughout my house.

2nd no contracts and services can be canceled at any time and monthly for my plan at full price is about $65/mo including the modem rental.

all in all a very good service that doesn't seem to be prone to outages and so forth and the tech support is based in billings as well and not half way across the globe.

hope this helps.

I have the Speed Plus package too and get around 15mbps. Of course, my router isn't your "typical" router.

whats different about your router? i might not even use a router but even if i did, i didnt know it limited speeds significantly.

My main router is a Dual Pentium III @ 1GHz with 512MB of RAM, 18GB HDD, Several NICs, and runs a customized Gentoo Linux OS. The entire specs are in my signature below.
My backup router is a Pentium 200MMX with 128MB of RAM, 15GB HDD, 3x Compaq NC3131 NICs, 10BT ISA NIC, and runs a customized Gentoo Linux OS.

Don't laugh at the 200MMX, it actually handles my link without problems. It definitely doesn't slow it down or bog down the processor much.

Directly connecting any standard computer to the Internet is asking for trouble, especially of you don't use a decent firewall or AV software.

For sure, even if you have a single computer a router wouldn't hurt to at least act as a barrier between your machine and the internet.

Bresnan offers 15Mbps/1Mbps in Kalispell. You will usually see your full speed, and sometimes more. The modem config file they push out for this speed package is actually slightly higher than the advertised speed, this is a fact because I downloaded it and saw the down/up rates when I was a customer.

Some months ago they had issues with high load which caused terrible latency / packet loss / etc... and they were also limiting simultaneous connections to different ips with their new CMTS they had installed on Sept 1st 2009 (iirc).

I switched to CenturyLink after months of this nonsense, and have never been happier. CenturyLink's fastest package in Kalispell is 10Mbps / 768Kbps, but I always get my FULL speed with that too (even with overhead). Their backbone with AT&T has lowered my ping tremendously to many game servers around the USA by about 10 - 40ms than what I used to see with Bresnan who uses a different backbone (360 networks was the most common for me). It's a slower speed, but I don't recall 1 time the connection has gone down in the middle of the night, or where my latency was terrible because of a CenturyLink problem. They have a solid network, and that is why I will choose to stay.

They are also supposed to be releasing 25Mbps / 2Mbps in June here in Kalispell. I have heard this from 2 local CenturyLink reps. If the connection is just as stable as it is now, which I'm sure it will be, Bresnan might see many customers switching over unless they bump their speed package up.

Long story short: Bresnan was very good for a while, then they got crappy. I don't know how it is now with them as I haven't been a customer for months. CenturyLink is rock solid, but not the fastest (still pretty fast though). And soon, they will be the fastest if/when they release their 25/2 package.

If you look in the massive slowdowns thread i posted traces of what bresnan's hops go through now. If you look at them you can see that it goes directly from bresnan to Level 3, no dumb backbone to worry about anymore yay!

The only down side to this now is that for me i always get inconsistent high pings (100-200) during nights usually starting around 7 or 8 and lasting until 12 to 1 in the morning. I was at my brother's house last night however playing MW2 on his PS3 and he has the Bresnan 15/1 connection which he shares with the people that live below him. I probably played for a good hour with no lag what so ever, i always had 3 or 4 bars. Then i came home later last night and i went to go play some cs and I get 100-200 to a match server. Then i looked at other servers and i was getting 50-150 depending on location. I'm thinking that Bresnan customers always come first so therefore they get the good connection while us Cable Montana/USA Dig subscribers suffer since we always come 2nd in line. O well life goes on... Can't wait until Lightnex decides to lay some fiber down in Laurel, they've had an agreement with the city for 2 or 3 years now and I'm on the waiting list.

Sorry for switching subjects, also Simba if you could please paste a trace to 66.225.198.131 during a weeknight around 7-10 or someone else in the Billings area that has Bresnan. I just want to compare my stats with someone's with Bresnan.

While I can't contribute anything live I do have my logs from a few days ago, including traces from when they cut Butte over to the 10gig network and from 360 to Level 3, which went to yet another peering partner in the process.
