US Passport replacement abroad?I hear of horror stories from people that lose their passport while abroad - basically usually their embassy will issue special papers for them to get back home and that is it...
I heard that US embassies can verify citizenship and issue a special one year long passport
I guess it depends on the embassy by embassy basis?
any one heard of anything like this...
Thank you... |

Q. WILL THE REPLACEMENT PASSPORT BE ISSUED FOR THE FULL 10-YEAR VALIDITY PERIOD FOR AN ADULT?
A. Replacements for lost passports are normally issued for the full 10-year period of validity for adults. Occasionally, cases will arise in which the consular officer has some lingering doubt because of statements made by the applicant, or other circumstances, but is still reasonably satisfied as to identity and citizenship. If there is not time to request and receive the Departments verification, a passport limited to 3 months may be issued. Limited passports may also be issued in cases in which an applicant has, by mistake, packed the passport with luggage being sent to another location, left the passport at home, perhaps in another country, but has to travel immediately, lost or been robbed of multiple passports in a short timespan, etc. When issuing a limited passport in an emergency situation, consular officers will carefully explain to the applicant that the passport is limited for the duration of the present trip only. When the applicant returns to the United States and wishes to travel again internationally, the applicant will have to apply for a replacement passport and pay the regular fee. » travel.state.gov/travel/ ··· 197.html |

Lost my Passport last year while in France....I had a color copy of my passort in my luggage and the Embassy in Paris issued me a new passport in less that 24 hours, the expiration date was 10 years from the new issued month. I'm sure a lot of what they can do is dependant on the location you are in....The Embassy in Paris is huge and seem to be full service. |

I like security I like peace of mind on wikitravel it says that there are some hacket ATMS that can duplicate cards and since you used it they would also know the PIN so the only way around is to change the PIN - I like doing that... And about the passport - wow so many backpackers get robbed of their things I do not care about anything that I loose - except maybe my passport... so it got me interested... but I did get robbed twice already - but that was a bit ago... |

You posted a lot of questions prior to this journey and some now that you are on it. Curious, are you going to post details somewhere of your experiences sometime? Supposedly you can speed-up the replacement of a lost/stolen passport by having a copy of the first page. You would need to store it separately from your passport, of course. |

Always travel with several copies of the passport. Fortunately, I only had to use it once. Lost my Passport at Heathrow but someone found it and returned it airport authorities so I got it back. |

I have been waiting as well. At least some pictures. I've sent postcards to a few people on BBR in the past and have some pictures posted here. Many of my travel ideas are based on experience from travelers as well as what I find on Discovery,History,Travel channel, movies, magazines, music, etc. Very interesting blog. Watching the history channel about the Burj Al Arab is the reason why I traveled to Dubai. That wonderful deaf percussionist(barefoot) Evelyn Glennie gave me the idea of joining samba school in Rio to play drums. New Zealand- Lord of the Ring. Machu Picchu- National Geographic(7th grade) India- The movie -Indiana Jones. Costa Rica- the movie "Medicine Man" Etc..etc..etc... |

I got two of them replaced. Both of them mutilated beyond recognition. You get a nice OLD style replacement with the numbers still hole punched on the top of the passport, black and white picture and the whole embroided seal punched through the passport page and your picture along with metal clasps. Really Vintage looking thing, some TSA agents will spend a while attempting to verify your Identity and checking the passport to make sure it's not fake...fun to watch. (Foreign countried don't even bat an eye) P.S. Re-verification of Citizenship and re-issuance took less then 3 hours in one country and 5 hours in another. |

When I was in Paris last summer we met some guy from Slovakia or someplace. Then he realized his passport was missing/stolen. I had my laptop and found an open wi-fi network and looked up his country's Paris embassy and he called them at 4a. Woke someone up who kindly told him to go file a police report, get a passport-type photo, and come by the embassy for a temporary passport so he could travel home that day. Ran into that guy later at the train station as he was headed for his 7a-ish train. He'd had the most trouble finding an open police station. He'd found a photo-booth at the train station for the picture, and had a taxi to get him to the embassy, but an open police station in the middle of the night had been hardest.
Anyway, it seems most embassies are able to take care of their citizens. |
