Exactly... when are they going to learn that the solution is NOT more redundant hardware. If they were really interested in "combin[ing] the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet" they would let me connect to their service via a software client in LinuxMCE.

or any box/os by means of simple tcp/ip, http, etc protocol using streaming formats/file types that are not proprietary

I will use my real computer with my DVI-HDMI to my plasma.and my audio going digital to a really nice denon receiver.

I concur.

All of these boxes fall short of the simplicity of double clicking something and just viewing it.

I want either a regular DVR, or a computer. All this inbetween stuff is destined to fail until the TV/film industry can get people paying for content again. Good luck with that!

There is potential for this to succeed: people who want to show a youtube video without turning the computer on, or people who want the downloading functionality my computer has without dealing with a computer. I can grab an episode of a show in a matter of minutes in HD and have it readily available. If this could be done cheaply without it being a science project on a set top box, it could flourish.
