[modem/router] 7500 won't stay in Bridge mode

So I have a Westell 7500 gateway that Verizon sent me when I first ordered my service. I acquired a Linksys WRV200 router and wanted to set it up as my gateway and use the Westell as only a modem. (I know that the Westell does switching, routing, and wireless, I just want to try out the Linksys.)

So I called up Tech Support and the guy had me go through the steps to turn the Westell into Bridge Mode (Turn off WiFi, change the VCs to 'Bridge' from 'Routed Bridge', turn off DHCP, etc...)

After we rebooted the Westell and only the DSL light was solid, I turned on the Linksys and plugged the Internet port on the Linksys to E1 on the Westell. I log into the Linksys and the Internet IP Address is 0.0.0.0 so I make sure that Internet is set to 'Automatic Configuration - DHCP', hit Save Changes, and wait for the Linksys to reboot. When I log back in to check, the Internet IP address is still 0.0.0.0. I look over to the Westell and notice that the Internet light is now turned on and solid. I have not touched the Westell since I changed it to Bridge mode and it rebooted.

I try again changing the Westell to Bridge mode and again after about 15 - 20 minutes the Internet light comes on again. I end up trying a third time and still no luck. I have never been able to get an Internet IP Address on the Linksys. This entire time I am on the phone with Verizon Tech Support.

Any help on getting my Westell to stay in Bridge Mode?

Clone the MAC address of the Westell 7500 or leave the equipment off overnight after bridging and see if you can get your Linksys to obtain an IP address afterward.

EDIT: I misread. I think I read somewhere that the Westell likes to operate in Routed Bridge mode for whatever reason. That is unless someone knows a way around such option. What you did should be bridgeable however.

No the MAC address would not be a factor because during every try the guy on the phone would tell me that he has to release the MAC address on their side.

I'm wondering why it won't bridge for you, but I also assume you haven't been able to get the Linksys to grab an IP yet. I'm not sure how DHCP works with the Westell 7500s since I use PPPoE in my area, but the first things I would try would be to clone the MAC Address of the modem (even though Verizon says that they are breaking the lease for you) and then bridge the modem itself. Once that is done, I would turn off the modem, plug in the Linksys (LAN port 1 to Linksys WAN), make sure the Linksys is set to DHCP with MTU of 1500, and then turn on the Westell and see if you can get an IP address. If the Westell's Internet light comes back on, is it setting itself back to Routed Bridge?

If you just want to use the Linksys as a router as well, you could keep the Westell as handling the connection and set the Linksys up in a way that would allow you use it as a switch and access point (Disabling NAT, DHCP, etc on Linksys letting Westell take care of such things).

But really I can't really help much unless someone else replies to the thread who knows a bit more about how the 7500 reacts to bridging in DHCP areas.

Ok so I don't know if it was the MAC address cloning or setting the MTU manually but the linksys was able to get an IP. Thanks for that.

Now DNS doesn't seem to work when I plug my laptop into the linksys and have it pull a 192.168.1.x address. But if I were to plug the laptop into Port 2 of the Westell, it'll pull a public IP and be fine on the internet.

At this point with both connected to the Westell, (assuming the Linksys is in Port 1), do the Linksys and the Laptop both hold Public IP addresses, if so are they different ? and what state is the 7500 in at this point, (lights and "bridge mode" setting) ?

Right now everything is back to the Westell running in Routed Bridge so that my home network is back up.

When I was trying to get the linksys up it did show that it had a public IP but any attempt to connect to the internet through it failed. The state of the Westell then was POWER - SOLID GREEN, DSL - SOLID GREEN, PORT1 - SOLID GREEN, so the Westell WAS staying in Bridge mode this time. When I plugged my laptop directly into the Westell it seemed as if the MAC got registered to the laptop and the internet worked perfectly (I went back to the linksys and it was back at 0.0.0.0), but since I had to leave at that moment, I left it and when I got back home called Verizon to release the MAC and have the Westell take over again. I'm going to try again later today as I remember a setting in the linksys that ask if it wants to act as a Router(Just routing) or Gateway(routing, NAT, etc...), and I didn't look at that when I tried today.

That's what it sounded like to me too, if they're advertising the same MAC, they'll "steal" the IP from each other.
Here's a tip: Once you get the Westell bridged, turn it off. Then set up the Linksys, make sure the Westell's MAC is in there, and connect it to the Westell, then power on the Westell, get sync, and power on the Linksys. Then once the Linksys has the public IP, go to the Linksys Status page and release the IP. Turn off the Westell. Turn off the MAC cloning in the Linksys. Wait a minute of two. Turn on the Westell. Now the Linksys MAC will be bound to the public IP, so neither the laptop nor the Westell will be able to take it.

Thanks, I'm going to try that in a bit, just one question, when do I power off the Linksys in the quote above? After I set it up but before I turn on the Westell?

Yup right then. It's probably not necessary, the Linksys should keep asking for an IP till it gets one, but power cycling after making changes and booting things up in order are good habits to have.

edit Forgot a point at the end - You may have to click Renew on the Linksys Status Page after the Westell boots back up, (if you didn't reboot the Linksys).

OMG Thank you thank you thank you so much. I did exactly that and now it works perfectly. Sorry about the late reply, but I had some things come up that night. But I just did it now and the Linksys is working PERFECTLY. Man I love this site.
