Aastra 6739i, Any ExperiencesHi, I was thinking of moving to the new Aastra 6739is' for our phone systems, especially because they have bluetooth capability and wideband audio. I've had experience with Polycom ip 650s in the past and was wondering if anybody here has used the Aastra 6739i and what he though of it.

I've not yet tried the 6739i, but I've heard good things about it from people who should know. It's a bit pricey, but loaded with features.
The IP650 is no slouch. I still use one every day. You could add cordless headset capability to that phone, perhaps for less than replacing it outright. Plantronics and GN/Jabra both have solutions in that regard. You might also have to choose between Bluetooth and DECT based solutions.
I sometimes wish that my Plantronics Savi Go headset worked with the IP650. I use with a soft phone or cell phone. They have a DECT-based variant that does, but its more costly because it has a more sophisticated base. Also, it would not be useful with my cell phone.
A friend has the latest headset from Jabra and tells me good things about that as well.
One thing is certain, you need to be very clear that you seek wideband/HDVoice capability when discussing these items with vendors. Most BT headsets do not yet support wideband.

Researching a bit more. It seems there is no way to get wide-band audio using the Aastra and a bluetooth headset. I guess there would be no reason to spend extra and get a wideband headset in that case. |

I have a friend who has one of these phones. I'll see if he can try it with a wideband BT headset. |

Aastra responded to my query about using Bluetooth headsets with the 6739i. » www.mgraves.org/voip/201 ··· eadsets/ |

Well, since nobody's saying anything I'll give my 5c here on this phone. Received the 6739i last week. First thing that you see is the huge 5.7" LCD screen which compared to my Polycom 650 is about twice the size. After reading the manual, unfortunately the 6739i doesn't have an "Administration Guide" yet so you don't really know exactly all the settings to setup on the XML files. I was relying on the Administration guide of the 57i. Anyway, took me about a day to get things going. I installed my two VOIP carriers (VOIP.ms and CallWithUs) and while I did have some hiccups in the beginning, I was able to get things working. As far as voice quality goes, I would say the Polycom still takes the top spot especially in the speakerphone. The main reason for me getting the 6739i was for the bluetooth and some of its other features. I've been using a Jawbone icon bluetooth headset without a problem for the past few days. It's nice to be able to walk around the office and do things while talking on the phone instead of being tied to my desk. The phone automatically connects to the headset if you go out of range and come back into range, which in my office is about 15-20 feet I'd say before you lose connection. The touch screen is huge and beautiful. Great idea on Aastra's part. The amount of settings and tinkering that one can do on these things is really mind boggling though. Since I'm not running a dedicated Asterisk server though a lot of the XML applications aren't going to work for me like visual voicemail etc. If you do have an Asterisk server though, you could have a very nice and feature rich desk phone on your hands. The only thing pet peeve for me is the lack of documentation still after over 6 months of being release there is still no Administrator Guide for the phone and you can't do a simple thing yet like change the background on the color screen. |

From the post I listed earlier you can get a list of "recommended" bluetooth headsets. None of the ones listed support wideband voice, but that's not to say that the phone itself won't.
If you're only getting 20 foot range with the Jawbone headset then we can infer that it's not a class 1 BT radio like the USB radio that comes with the Plantronics Savi Go. Class 1 devices get around 100 foot range.
Aastra's response my query was less than definitive. They say that wideband is supported for the handset, speakerphone and headset...but they say nothing about the BT cordless headset.
We won't know for sure until someone tries to pair a known wideband headset like the Savi Go with the 6739i and hears the result. |
