My avatar looks like me, if I was 2D.

How often do cartoons actually win against real films?

Avatar winning an Oscar would bring down the entire establishment - unless it was an Oscar for best 3D of the month or something.

Sci-fi films rarely win the Best Picture award.

Donno. Ask the makers of Titanic or Lord of the Rings.

Sure it earned a lot of money, that doesn't make it a great movie. Perhaps I am in the minority of those who like a good and at least somewhat original story?

What, a coral reef-of-colors above water wasn't original??

The underlying theme(s) of every movie is the same.

Love
Money
Greed
Good guy / bad guy

And there may be one or 2 more "themes", but they are all the same. The only difference is how they get there and what they show you to influence your feeling of that theme(s).

Saying it is not original material can be extended to virtually everything including games and music.
