Screw it...

At this point, I'm just about ready to go back to a dumbphone. I'm tired of the "communication" companies charging outrageous prices for things that cost them cents on the dollar.

Oh, I missed the memo / law that says a business can only make so much of a profit. How much mark up is a business allowed now?

Providing data over 3G is not cents on the dollar. It costs a tremendous amount of money to deploy a network like that.

10%. Less if there's real competition.

The network's been deployed for a while and been seriously underinvested in. AT&T has done next to nothing to expand or improve their 3G coverage area, and their network is substandard. There's a reason they tripled their profits from 2005 to 2008.

Wow. So much wrong with this statement. AT&T has network issues sure, to to say they've done nothing to expand it couldn't be further from the truth.

Yes, their financials improved after 2005 -- because they merged with SBC and started reporting combined financials.

Annual data

Revenue (in millions)

2006 $55,888.0
2007 $107,378.0
2008 $111,359.0
2009 $111,055.0

Net income (in millions) - Calculated Profit Margin
2006 $7356.0 13.2%
2007 $11951.0 11.1%
2008 $12867.0 11.6%
2009 $12535.0 11.3%

So yes, their total profit dollars have gone up because revenue has doubled, but their margin has actually decreased.

The data is available many places, including here: »investing.businessweek.com/resea···ker=T:US

How much are the CEOs making? Good ol' Ed Whitacre and whatever assclown replaced him. Hopefully someone else with a "you're not using my pipes for free boy" mentality.

Funny, I don't recall saying anything about profit.

I think Mirriam-Webster would disagree:

prof·it (präf'it)
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): -s
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin profectus advance, progress, profit, success, from profectus, past participle of proficere to go forward, make progress

Definition: the excess of returns over expenditure in a transaction or series of transactions: as a : the excess of the price received over the price paid for goods sold -- opposed to loss b : the excess of the price received over the cost of purchasing and handling or of producing and marketing goods

This country has totally gone down the tubes when businesses are only allowed to charge so much because the government says what they can make. I really hope you were being sarcastic.

AT&T's current profit margin is well under 10%.
