blitzgp join:2010-04-22 Port Orchard, WA | Port Orchard: Issues with Motorola SB6120? Anyone else in the PO area having issues with sb6120s staying connected? Ive talked to Motorola and wave tech support, and theyre both full of it. Wave claims they dont support DS3.0, theyve never heard of issues with 6120, they work fine blah blah, both sides of the BS spectrum theyve told me. Motorola TS says i need to get my upstream power level reduced from 49dbmv to 42 by having the cable company install stuff to my line to reduce the power level.
Every company that sells these things online and has reviews by customers have a few things in common: 20% of the people claim they get instant boost to their speed (whatever, maybe they are maybe they arent). 20% have issues getting connected, but are able to work with their provider to get it working (they never discuss any possible solutions, possibly just needed a config file for the model).
Im at wits end getting someone to fess up what the issue is. Here are my symptoms:
Connect 6120, after a few min it will disconnect. All the lights will stay on, but I cannot use the internet (I think wave was able to see me get disconnected too). When I got to the web status page, Ranging Status goes to null, and if I refresh the page a lot, I can see it ranging from 20 to 60dbmv. There is almost a pattern to it, where its roughly connected for 90 sec and disconnected for 3.5min. |

| Wave doesn't utilize DOCSIS 3.0. That's not "BS", that's currently the truth.
I do not know if the Motorola SB6120 and DOCSIS 3.0 are backwards compatible with 2.0 or not.
Is there any reason you bought a new modem? -- "And Tehuno said let there be haste, not mp5, and there was haste. All creatures of the world rejoiced." -WotLK Ch. 3.3.2 |

1 edit | reply to blitzgp This statement "I can see it ranging from 20 to 60dbmv." seems to be your problem...
Where does the 49dBmV come in to play?
Forget the fact that this is from an Adelphia FAQ. it holds true for DOCSIS units
»Adelphia High Speed Internet »FAQ: Acceptable cable modem signal levels.
Upstream (Tx) Transmit Power (a.k.a. Return Signal) level: This is the amount of signal transmitted by the modem to reach the receiver in the cable company head-end.
+8 dBmV to +58 dBmV maximum for QPSK. (DOCSIS 1.x) +8 dBmV to +55 dBmV maximum for 8 QAM and 16 QAM. (DOCSIS 1.x) +8 dBmV to +54 dBmV maximum for 32 QAM and 64 QAM. (A-TDMA DOCSIS 2.0) +8 dBmV to +53 dBmV maximum for S-CDMA DOCSIS 2.0 modulation rates. |

blitzgp join:2010-04-22 Port Orchard, WA | reply to blitzgp drew: to clarify the "does not support DS3.0" comment, the technician was trying to imply DS3.0 equipment will not work on their system which it had better. All DOCSIS equipment is 100% forward and backwards compatible with other DOCSIS versions. I think DS3.0 just allows channel bonding for more bandwidth. So the new features wont carry over, but the equipment will work together at the lowest common version.
I got a new modem because a)sbg900 routing hardware/software sucked real bad and b)one of the technicians told me that they had upgraded to DS3.0 in my area. I have been having 10% packet loss issues, that the cable company couldnt see or at least claim that. The issues appear to be much better, but I still cannot get my 6120 to work.
chpalmer: the ranging only happens after the disconnect. Theres a 6120 flowchart that I shows the whole connection process, so there are a few places that could cause these issues. I know that my signal strength is satisfactory, I was pointing out that the motorola tech was full of caca. He also told me there was no such thing as upstream SNR, the cable company was sending me upstream power and a few other things. |

gtojim join:2002-03-18 Concord, CA | Wave/Astound has been testing DOCSIS 3.0 50/5mb service in the SF Bay Area.
Just checked the Wave/Astound web site, only 3 levels of Internet service is currently being offered, 50/5mb isn't listed.
The tech might be correct in stating DS3.0 is in your area, possibly for testing. It might be possible Wave CS might not be aware of any DOCSIS 3.0 testing.
Good luck, hope you get things resolved. |
