| wow shaw, you killed newsgroups So after everything that I have read on your website, about all the bs about you not changing any of the service, or how " you will still get the same great service " I can honestly say that I am not in the least bit impressed. Not only do you have the slowest of all the internet providers in hamilton ( this is now including bell ) never thought I would say that, but now you seem to keep "caping" your services.
i know someone will probably say that things like newsgroups or torrents are bad for bandwidth, but seriously, what do you pay for an internet connection for then? This is just really terrible, I really wish that their were other alternatives, or i wish that shaw hamilton would be more like the shaw in winnipeg, the shaw that offers performance and speed.
Either way, just ranting, not impressed AT all....

| Thats pretty pathetic that they removed newsgroups, but I honestly saw it coming. The shaw in Thunder Bay offers newsgroups but it blocks all alt.binaries addresses, so I figured it was only a matter of time until they dropped it entirely, lots of ISP's nowadays have discontinued newsgroup access.
I'd recommend just getting onto a cheap newsgroup server billed monthly, some plans can be had for as cheap as $10/mo.
As for the speed being less than Bell, you are so true, I actually switched off Shaw to Bell for their Fibe 25 internet. Sure its not really fiber optics, but its at least 250% better than the internet Shaw/MC was offering.
Crappy wiring in my house though causes my connection to be unstable if I stress it too much (i.e. uploading at 800kb/sec whilst downloading at 3MB/sec), so if Shaw can offer a service that compares with that speed and price, I will gladly switch back for the better stability.
But even tempermental internet of the extreme variety still outdoes terrible internet with stableness. | | | u know what's funny, I live in a house thats just over a year old, so i would not even blame the "wiring" at all. Its does not matter if its old or new, its the service.
Shaw does have really good plans and amazing speed, just not in hamilton. They are not officially the slowest ISP in this area, and I think they wont do anything about it because they know the consumer cant do anything about it. Sure you can switch to bell, but in the end you are still going to have to sacrafice something. What I really dont understand is that when i moved here in 96, I had the same internet speeds as I do now, like are you KIDDING me shaw?
With the rate that computers advance, the size of files now, the size of video's, everything gets bigger, you speed should be increasing to meet the demands of your customers.
either way, not impressed. | | | reply to shawuser Oh this really sucks! I hope this is just temporary as they were supposed to be working some things this month. I hope we can get an official response from someone. I never abused their usenet service but sometimes is came in handy for a quick download. I did notice the speed wasn't topping off at 7Mbps for a long time. It was around 3-4Mbps, but that was fine with me. | | Reviews:

Well in my case it really is the wiring, as I had Bell here to test the signal quality outside the house and inside, and there was a 50% loss in signal from the box outside the house to the pots splitter.
If theres anything to look forward to with shaw though, they DO plan to have faster speeds, they just need to build the network for it, I imagine MountainCable just left things as they were for quite some time so its gotta get overhauled. I'm confident though that by years end Shaw Hamilton will have at least 15Mbps service, if not more. | | | reply to shawuser I am raelly hoping that you are correct in your asumptions. It would be really nice if shaw would actually make an attemp to catch up to the rest of the world. You know, a 7mb line is not that bad, if you are talking about 10 years ago. With the way that things are evolving, im sorry to say, but it will just not cut it any more.
15 mb line is the least that they should do. That would still almost fall below the standards for these days. Shaw , I really hope that you are reading this and also take this into consideration.
I understand the want vs the demand vs reality, but still. as a customer, we could really use a huge increase in speed. People are talking, and with more and more options being available every day, i would strongly suggest that you make a move to keep the customers you alerady have, and maybe, just mabe attract a few more
