[Connectivity] Motorola SBG6580

Finally tracked down one of these D3 Wireless Modem Gateways for my new home. Tech left after connecting TV and opened a ticket regarding my lack of internet connectivity. Call several hours later from tech support telling me the modem isn't supported as they have no "boot file".

I am interested in finding out others experience regarding Comcast and new equipment. How long does it usually take for Motorola to supply the compatible file to Comcast? Is there any way around this, or does anyone know how to help the Comcast techs get this working? Why even bring a modem to market before it's supported by the largest Cable provider? Are there any other cable ISPs in the Philadelphia area the do support the SBG6580? Should I just return this modem (and take a 25% restocking fee thump) or just hold on to it?

This is by far the best solution for me, but if I can't get it to work, I would appreciate any other equipment suggestions. Thanks in advance.

The cable modem has to go through certification testing in Comcast's labs before they push out the bootfiles for it. It will probably be weeks before a bootfile is available but I have heard that the modem is undergoing testing.

If I were you I would hold on to the modem and just rent a modem from Comcast until the bootfile is available. It's $5 a month to rent a cable modem but hopefully you won't have to do that long

Ran into the same situation with a customer, they somehow acquired a moto D3 emta SB6220. I don't where you people are getting these things.

Not sure where you're coming from noisefloor- the SBG6580 is suppose to be a retail product by Motorola released sometime this month, not a service provider only model like the SB6220.

It seems to me someone is selling them before the service providers are ready to accept them, kind of how the post reads.
I can certainly see where someone would buy a retail product and find this out afterwards...

I found it at the Best Buy on Roosevelt Blvd in Philadelphia. It was $149.99. Looking this morning, it is no longer listed on the Best Buy website.

That is why I originally posted - why would one of the largest manufacturers of client-owned cable modems release a product through one of the largest retailers in the US before it was supported by the largest cable provider in North America? I still hope for answers to my original questions.

This modem is not currently approved on comcast's list. They haven't finished the testing on it yet, it may be soon but is not yet. $400 for it yikes!

Keep the DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola Router. The bootfile will be pushed out in a couple of days Nationally. It's a very nice router.

I see another new D3 modem (not a gateway) on Best Buy site , that is also not approved by Comcast yet. It's the Zoom 5341 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem »www.bestbuy.com/site/Zoom+-+DOCS···75866634 . It has the Texas Instruments chipset. »www.lightreading.com/document.as···lr_cable . Does anyone know when this one will be on the approved list ?

Just got the 6580 today and called comcast, gave them the MAC and away it went.... and this sucker screams. I had the 6120 and the 6580 is faster!!!

TJ---I picked up this unit from best buy two days ago and called in the mac and sn to which they asked me for make and model number and they refused to activate it saying it isn't on their approved list. How were you able to get service from CC for the SBG6580?? What city and state are you located in?

Same story with me. Not able to activate with Comcast Chicago. Interesting when I hook it up, it shows everything is OK and even shows internet access but I get that Comcast service message. I called customer service who told me they would get back to me with a timeframe, if any, for acceptance of the SBG6580. I have heard Cox cable out West is in same situation. One would have thought that Motorola would have had these major providers ready for the launch. I did not know I was employed by Motorola to help them push acceptance of their devices. Maybe I will send them a bill.

Evidently, it is not Motorolas fault for this crap. I spoke with a gentleman from Moto about this problem and he told me it's just the offices (local) at CC being slow about approving the model. He told me that he has had calls about this problem with CC, Cox and other providers, yet in other parts of the nation it is already approved. He gave me a few area codes for "offices" that people are successfully using SBG6580. Two of them are CC - 410, 815, one is a mom and pop provider and I believe the other is a Cox - 630, 239. Hope this serves as some ammunition for people experiencing this problem. I think if people call their providers, give them hell and use this info straight from Moto, that might help get the ball rolling.

According to ConnectedHome2go blog, Mari Silbey writes that "The Motorola SBG6580 snagged DOCSIS 3.0 certification last December, and a Mark of Excellence award in March. It’s also been a topic on user forums since January of this year. Now the cable modem gateway is available in retail, exclusively from Best Buy."

»connectedhome2go.com/2010/06/22/···est-buy/

So is the boot file available nationally yet? It's been 12 days since the original post.
