iTunes accts hacked

I did a search but didn't see anything posted. My son's iTunes acct was hacked several weeks ago. The hackers were able to charge around $600.00 worth of stuff using his acct. I discovered another friend of mine had his acct hacked the same week. Luckily my son got all the money put back in his acct from the bank.

From what I hear these iTunes hacks have been a big deal and a bunch of people have been hacked.

Has anyone heard about this or have any insight?

If it's already been posted and beaten to death and I missed it...sorry!

Last week my bank called me about 3 small charges on my credit card that were fraudulent and I was wondering how the thieves got the number. I use this credit card on iTunes but was never notified that my iTunes account was hacked. The fraudulent charges were from a social networking and a gaming site. Neither of which, do I frequent. So being paranoid, I dban'd my harddrive and reinstalled. I practice the layered security you learn about here on dslr and am careful about what I download or click on. I'd be interested to know if my iTunes account was hacked too. Of course that credit card was cancelled.

I know they could have got the number from some gas station or any number of other ways. CBS news has a segment tomorrow regarding credit card readers they can just put up against your wallet or purse and get your info. Crazy stuff.

I think I'll start using those one-time credit card numbers in the future.

How were you notified of your sons account being hacked?

Do you have a link regarding iTunes being hacked broadly? All I could find was one article about a user in Canada whose account was hacked in April. iTunes and her bank who issued her CC both claim they are not at fault, although her bank says they "are looking into it".

This sounds more like a hit or miss thing with individuals being hacked for CC info, account passwords, etc., rather than iTunes itself being hacked. Have these machines been checked for malware?

I've not heard anything widespread.

It is possible to decouple your itunes account from your credit card. Then just fund the account via itunes cards as needed. That way your exposure is low/nill.

I was not able to find much on it myself. With my son I know they hacked his iTunes acct specifically. They just purchased music before he saw what was happening. No other charges. My stupid son was using his debit card and was lucky to get it all back. He has since changed his iTunes acct password. He said he had several other friends locally who reported the same thing.

My friend who had it happen is a systems admin so don't think he was hacked.

I honestly can't say for sure about my son's system. Since he moved out I don't check his computer much anymore but while he was living here with me he never had anything on his system. Over 5 years of internet travels.

Perhaps it's not as widespread as I was led to believe.

One of the things I recommended to my son was to use a email address that he only uses to log on to acct like this. If someone knows your email address all they have to guess next is your password.

Mostly anecdotal problems. It doesn't seem to be a widespread hacking of iTunes itself. Which would lead one to believe that individuals have been compromised in some way.

I checked the link before I posted it, La Luna See Profile
The query was iTunes security Issues, querying forum based discussions over the last 30 days. Link still does work for me, using IE.

Sorry for the inconveinece, if any.

Were the devices touch's with os and wi-fi or ipods.
Sounds most likely PC infected with malware/keyloggers.

Just an FYI, the Chinese counterpart to eBay, Taobao, has hacked iTunes accounts on sale. Apparently, hackers find that it can be more profitable to sell these accounts than to use them. And the prices are actually quite cheap, so I imagine that there must be a huge supply of accounts.

When you say hacked you mean stolen or brute forced not that someone has gone to the bother of hacking the pc/mac and then hacked itunes, then posted the their spoils for sale at bargain price.??

Still getting Google.ca, La Luna See Profile ? Hmmm... a conundrum indeed, if you use the search parameters I already posted, you should arrive at the URL.

And sure enough, this turns out to be true.

iTunes Hacked? Apple Mum on App Store Chaos (CBS)

quote:
On Sunday, Engadget reported an inexplicable uptick in sales of book apps by a developer identified as Thuat Nguyen. According to the blog, at the time of writing its report, Nguyen apps accounted for 42 of the top 50 books by revenue in the Books section of the iTunes App Store. Engadget went on to mention "a number of people reporting up to hundreds of dollars being spent unwillingly from their [iTunes] account to these specific books."

Blog TNW Apple reported that the phenomenon appeared to extend beyond apps by one developer, and that it seemed to be international in scope.

Appears that this happens if JavaScript is disabled - by virtue of NoScript or otherwise.

http://www.google.ca/#q=iTunes+security+issues

(Most likely ? US users would not have google.ca allowed in NoScript. If you were to manually disable JavaScript, the same occurs, so this is not a NoScript issue.)

With JavaScript allowed, the link "rolls" (in a Mozilla browser) to something like this:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=iTunes+security+issues&cad=h
